Jays fall short against Perry

The Perry Lecompton Kaws beat the Sabetha High School Bluejays in thrilling, buzzer beater fashion on Sabetha’s home court in the first meeting between these two teams. In the rubber match on Tuesday, Jan. 31, the Jays would be on the road looking to return the favor against their Big Seven opponent. But Perry cutoff the lane to their opponent’s offense, outscored Sabetha in three of the four quarters and handed Sabetha their fourth loss in league play, 38-49.

Perry’s man defense kept the Bluejays on the perimeter to start the contest, and Sabetha’s guards had to take the reins on offense.

“Perry started strong with a good defensive game plan and took away our inside play,” said Coach Scott Burger.

The game was tight at the end of the first with Perry leading, 11-9.

In the second quarter, Sabetha struggled to get the ball to drop and managed only two field goals. The Kaws outscored the Jays, 11-5, in the second frame and led 22-14 at the intermission. Christian Meyer led Sabetha in scoring in the first half with 5 points.

“This was a game where I felt like we could never get over the hump,” Burger said. “We had 11 turnovers in the first half, which kept us from scoring many points.”

With the Bluejay post players garnering Kaw defensive attention, Sabetha’s guards attacked the lane.

Joseph Gruber led his team in scoring in the third quarter with 8 points when he punched into the lane and found a way to get his shots to fall. Meyer and Trae Snyder each buried a triple in the period, and the Jays outscored the Kaws 14-11 to close the gap to 33-28, favoring Perry to end the third.

Gruber brought his team within striking distance at 6:36 of the fourth with a three, and Brett Stallbaumer tied the game at 34 with a triple at the 5:10 mark. But the Kaws came charging back to defend their home court.

“Our kids made a great effort in the second half to go from 12 down to tying the game, but we were unable to stop their best player down the stretch,” Burger said.

The Kaws Canaan Daniels slashed at Sabetha’s defense and would end the night with 16 points.

Perry would take the victory over Sabetha by a score of 49-38, completing the regular season sweep. The Jays fell to 6-4 in the Big Seven with the loss, and 7-7 overall.
