Last four Berliners

Four members of Sabetha Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post 7285, enjoy gathering to reminisce about their military assignments in West Berlin, Germany, during the Cold War. Pictured are (L-R) Eldon Rokey, Ed Epple, Bud Bauman and Alan Thagard. “We are Berliners,” they say. Rokey was assigned in Berlin in 1945-46, Epple in 1956-58, Bauman in 1956-58 and Thagard in 1971-1974. Epple and Bauman served together in Berlin. Epple and Bauman joke about being drafted and then being assigned at the same time to Berlin. Rokey, Epple and Bauman were there before the wall went up in 1961 and became a “Divided City,” These four men are the last four “Berliners” in Sabetha.
