Mary Katherin Werner

Mary Katherin Werner

Mary Katherin Werner, 99, died Friday, July 7, 2017, at the Presbyterian Manor in Newton.

Mary was born Nov. 4, 1917, in the Capioma Township in Nemaha County to Henry William (Harry) and Helen Ralston Grewing. In 1935, she married Martin Joseph Werner of the Fidelity area. They were blessed with eight children. In approximately 1943, they moved to rural Kincaid. Mary was a loving mom, working hard helping to raise their family.

During the 1960s, Mary was employed by Whitesides IGA, later retiring from there. Mary’s retirement years were busy with church, gardening, embroidery, quilting, cooking, flowers, family and friends. Mary had a good sense of humor, a sharp mind and never knew a stranger. Her greatest joy was family. Happy memories were made at “Granny’s House,” and she loved the laughter that her home came to represent especially during the many holidays and reunions where all gathered.

Mary had a deep faith in God and believed “our purpose is to help one another.”

Preceding her in death were her husband Martin; her parents; brothers Edwin and Harry; three sons Maurice, Martin Jr. and Kenneth; daughters JoAnn and Cynthia; great grandson Malik Werner; and sons-in-laws Joe Houk and Gary Smith.

Survivors include sons Thomas and Leo (Vicki); daughter Delores M. Smith; son-in-law Lyle Osborn; daughters-in-law Leona and Sheryl Werner; 20 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 22, at St John’s Catholic Church in Iola, preceded by a rosary at 10 a.m. Burial will be at 8 p.m. in St. Augustine Church cemetery at Fidelity.
