Blue-Green Algae warning at local lakes
A public health warning has been issue for the Brown County State Fishing Lake and Hiawatha City Lake due to the presence of high levels of toxic Blue-Green Algae.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), along with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT), announced Thursday, Aug. 31, that the Brown County State Fishing Lake and Hiawatha City Lake are among 10 lakes in the state that have been placed under “warning” status.
KDHE says activities such as boating and fishing may be safe. However, direct contact with the water is strongly discouraged for people, pets and livestock.
Fish can be eaten, as long as they have been rinsed with clean water. However, the fillet portion should be the only part that is consumed. The other parts should be discarded.
The KDHE will continue to monitor the lake and will provide updates as conditions warrant.
