Sabetha goes 3-1 at Nemaha Central Invitational

Coming off a sweep of Hiawatha on Thursday evening, the Sabetha High School Lady Jays headed to Seneca for the Nemaha Central Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 9.

The Lady Jays came away with three wins and just one loss in pool play.

Sabetha, Atchison and Rock Creek all boasted 3-1 records at the end of pool play, making it a three-way tie with only two teams able to advance to tournament play.

The tiebreaker did not go Sabetha’s way, and Atchison and Rock Creek advanced to tournament play.

“The girls played great,” said Head Coach Abby Stueve. “We didn’t make it into the tournament due to a three-way tie, but we left with a 3-1 record and improved on the season to 5-7.”

Nemaha Central was the eventual tournament champion, defeated Atchison in straight sets in the championship match.

In pool play, Sabetha topped Horton, Riverside and Atchison, and fell to Rock Creek.

Sabetha defeated Horton in straight sets — 25-20 and 25-12. Sabetha defeated Riverside in split sets — 22-25, 25-10 and 28-26. Sabetha defeated Atchison in straight sets — 25-15 and 25-22. Sabetha fell to Rock Creek in straight sets — 19-25 and 23-25.

Overall, Sabetha served well — hitting 163 of 179 for 91.06 percent efficiency. Senior Kymbrie Ulrich led in serving, hitting 32 of 33 serves on the day, including six aces. Sophomore Morgan Schuette hit 30 of 33 serves with six aces.

Offensively, freshman Melinna Schumann tallied 46 good hits, including 19 kills. Sophomore Nikole Kuenzi knocked down 45 good hits with 11 kills.

Defensively, junior Hillary Krebs had 60 digs and 37 serve receives, while N. Kuenzi had 22 digs and 52 serve receives.

“I couldn’t be happier with the progress they are making,” Stueve said. “We want to peak in post season, and I truly believe we are making the steady climb towards it. We are speeding our game up and putting in 100 percent effort at all times.”
