Jay cross county teams claim first at Nemaha Central

The Sabetha High School girls’ and boys’ cross country teams both earn gold at the Nemaha Central Invitational on Thursday, September 21. The Bluejay harriers hit the road Thursday, Sept. 21, to compete in the Nemaha Central Invitational. Both teams dominated the course and brought home two first-place finishes.

Boys

As a team, the boys placed first, defeating Centralia, Maur Hill-Mount Academy, Nemaha Central, Washington County, Jefferson County North, Hiawatha, Valley Heights and Horton.

Junior Henry Glynn led the Bluejays and placed fourth overall, trailing just 19 seconds behind Quinn Buessing of Axtell, who claimed first place. Glynn ran his best time of the season – 18 minutes, 33 seconds.

Sophomore Micah Romines finished second for the Bluejays, coming in 14th place overall. He was followed by freshman Charlie Bestwick in 22nd, freshman Braden Menold in 24th, freshman Darrin Funk in 25th, and junior Jesse Burger in 46th.

Girls

The girls’ team also placed first as a team, defeating MH-MA, Atchison County and Onaga.

Freshman Hattie Lukert led the Lady Jays, finishing in second place with a time of 22 minutes, 14 seconds – her best time of the season.

She was followed closely by junior Skylar McAfee in third with a time of 22 minutes, 16 seconds; and junior Megan Meyer in fourth with a time of 22 minutes, 29 seconds. Freshman Kenzie Meyer placed 10th overall, freshman Ellen Glynn placed 19th, and senior Karrington Payne placed 33rd.

“We had a great meet, our kids ran really well,” said Head Coach Doug Leiker. “We are working hard and getting better each meet. Way to go Sabetha Blue Jay runners.”

The Bluejays compete at Horton at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28.
