Bluejays place third, fourth at home meet

After a long season of traveling, the Sabetha Bluejay cross country team was finally able to host their first meet of the 2017 season. The Lady Jays placed third as a team, while the Bluejays placed fourth.

Boys

The boys’ team placed fourth overall, behind Baldwin in first, Wamego in second and Hiawatha in third.

Junior Henry Glynn led the Bluejays, placing eighth out of 145 runners with his best time of the season – 18 minutes, 28 seconds.

Glynn was followed by freshman Kaden Dillon in 17th, sophomore Micah Romines in 22nd, freshman Braden Menold in 37th, freshman Darrin Funk in 48th, freshman Charlie Bestwick in 58th and junior Jesse Burger in 97th.

Girls

The girls’ team placed third overall, coming in behind Baldwin in first and Hiawatha in second.

Freshman Hattie Lukert led the Lady Jays, also running her best time of the season — 27 seconds better — of 21 minutes, 47 seconds. She placed fourth out of 86 runners.

Lukert was followed by junior Megan Meyer in ninth, junior Skylar McAfee in 22nd, freshman Kenzie Meyer in 32nd, freshman Ellen Glynn in 53rd, sophomore Madisen Cochran in 57th, and senior Karrington Payne in 82nd.

Head Coach Doug Leiker said the team performed well and he is proud to be their coach.

“Our kids ran very well at our home meet yesterday,” he said. “I am so proud of them. They are working really hard and are getting ready for our Big Seven league meet at Nemaha Valley. It’s hard to believe we only have three meets left – league, regionals and state! The cross country season went by so fast. I have loved coaching these kids and am proud to be their coach. They will be in my heart for the rest of my life. I am proud to be a Bluejay coach!

The Bluejays will travel Thursday, Oct. 12, to compete in the Big 7 League Meet at Nemaha Central.
