Wetmore falls in Homecoming match-up

The Wetmore Cardinals welcomed Axtell to town for their Homecoming game Friday, Oct. 6. The Cardinals held the lead at the end of the first quarter but Axtell came back and would eventually win 62-26.

Despite the loss, Head Coach Rick Schnacker said the team never gave up.

“We played hard, never quit, and played through adversity,” he said. “We gave up too many big plays and missed opportunities of our own, but I’m proud of our efforts. I give credit to Axtell and their coaching staff. They are a good team.”

Wetmore held the lead after the end of the first quarter, after senior Kyler Vance scored one 53-yard touchdown and one 67-yard touchdown. Junior Joel Hutfles ran in for a two-point conversion after the second touchdown. Axtell scored 12 points during the first. After the end of one, Wetmore led 14-12.

Axtell pulled ahead in the second quarter, tacking on an additional 34 points, while Wetmore senior Ethan Osterhaus scored the only touchdown for the Cardinals during the second. Going into the second half, Axtell led 46-20.

Axtell bumped up their score to 54 during the third quarter, all while holding Wetmore scoreless.

During the fourth quarter, Axtell added another 8 points. Wetmore scored their last touchdown of the evening on a 39-yard pass from Hutfles to Vance. The final score was 62-26, Axtell

Schnacker said the team is now preparing for next week’s game.

“We need to continue to improve and move forward and get ready for Blue Valley,” he said. “I am proud of these boys.”

Wetmore will travel to Blue Valley Friday, Oct. 13, for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
