Bluejay harriers place second at League

After hosting their first meet last week, the Bluejay cross country team traveled to Seneca to compete in the Big 7 League Meet Thursday, Oct. 12. The teams placed second overall and Head Coach Doug Leiker said he is proud of both teams.

“Kids ran well at League,” he said. “I am very proud of both the girls and boys teams.”

Boys

The boys’ team placed second overall, following Hiawatha in first. Other teams placings were Perry Lecompton in third, Royal Valley in fourth, Nemaha Central in fifth and Holton sixth.

The Bluejays were led by junior Henry Glynn in third, who ran his best time of the season of 17 minutes, 11 seconds. Glynn was followed by freshman Kaden Dillon in fifth, sophomore Micah Romines in seventh, freshman Braden Menold in 13th, freshman Charlie Bestwick in 14th, freshman Darrin Funk in 22nd and junior Jesse Burger in 48th.

Leiker said he is ready for regionals this weekend and expects both teams to do well.

“I am looking forward to regionals next Saturday at Leonardville,” he said. “We have a great chance to qualify for the State meet. We are running really well at this point in our season, and I think we can qualify both teams.”

The Bluejays will travel to Leonardville on Saturday, Oct. 21, to compete in the regional meet. The girls’ team runs at 10:40 a.m. and the boys’ team runs at noon. The top three teams at regionals will go to the State meet the following week.

“Go Jays, you got to believe to achieve,” Leiker said.
