Bluejay harriers advance to State

The Bluejay harrier teams qualified for the State Meet this weekend after both teams placed third at the Regional Meet held Saturday, Oct. 21, at Leonardville.

Head Coach Doug Leiker said he is pleased with Sabetha’s performance.

“I was proud of the way our kids competed at the regional meet,” he said. “We have competed well since the Sabetha meet and we have gotten better at league and regionals. I think we will run even better at the state meet Saturday. I am looking forward to state competition at Rim Rock farm.”

Girls

The girls’ team placed third overall out of nine teams. They followed Hiawatha in first and St. Marys in second. Other teams placing were ACCHS in fourth, Perry Lecompton in fifth, Maur Hill-Mount Academy in sixth, Pleasant Ridge in seventh, Riley County in eighth and Royal Valley in ninth. There were 66 runners in the girls’ race.

It was a close race between freshman Bluejay Hattie Lukert and freshman Red Hawk Katherine Madsen, who were neck and neck sprinting for the finish line and vying for second place. Lukert claimed second place after she and Madsen dove across the finish line.

Both girls finished the race with a time of 21 minutes, 22 seconds, but Lukert beat Madsen by six hundredths of a second.

Also placing in the top 10 behind Lukert were junior Megan Meyer in sixth with a time of 22 minutes, 1 second; and junior Skylar McAfee in 10th with a time of 22 minutes, 29 seconds.

Freshman Kenzie Meyer placed 19th, sophomore Madisen Cochran placed 44th, freshman Ellen Glynn placed 47th and senior Karrington Payne placed 65th.

Boys

The boys’ team also placed third overall out of 12 teams. They followed Hiawatha in first and Riley County in second.

Other teams placing were Pleasant Ridge in fourth, St. Marys in fifth, Perry Lecompton in sixth, Royal Valley in seventh, Silver Lake in eighth, MH-MA in ninth, Nemaha Central in 10th, McLouth in 11th and Horton in 12th.

There were 93 runners in the boys race. Leading the Bluejays was junior Henry Glynn in 14th, with a time of 18 minutes, 33 seconds.

He was followed by freshman Kaden Dillon in 15th with a time of 18 minutes, 35 seconds, and sophomore Micah Romines in 16th with a time of 18 minutes, 47 seconds.

Freshman Braden Menold placed 31st, freshman Darrin Funk placed 43rd, freshman Charlie Bestwick placed 48th and junior Jesse Burger placed 74th.

“I have loved coaching these kids this cross country season and they will go far and do well after high school,” Leiker said. “Go Bluejay runners!”

The Bluejays will compete at the State Meet Saturday, Oct. 28, at Rim Rock Farms in Lawrence. The 3A girls will run at 11:10 a.m., and 3A boys will run at 12:55 p.m.
