Following three matches played over the course of three hours, the Sabetha High School volleyball team had won two and lost one at Sub-State competition, held on Saturday, Oct. 21, at Horton.

The Jays defeated ACCHS in round one and Maur Hill-Mount Academy in the semi-finals, then fell to Nemaha Central in the championship match-up. Sabetha earned a Sub-State Runner Up trophy, and finished the season with an 11-25 record.

“From day one, I have been talking to the girls about climbing the mountain and peaking in the post season,” said Head Coach Abby Stueve. “Preparing for Sub-State took all season of high expectations and the athletes buying in and trusting the process. Saturday, the girls did just that. They stepped onto the court with confidence to compete.”

“Coming in as the sixth seed and making it to the championship was an accomplishment. We walked off the court that day without regrets, and I am very proud of them,” Stueve said. “I want to thank my assistant coach, Maggie Suther, for her help to make team adjustments throughout the season to become a more successful team.”

Round One

Sabetha came into the Sub-State tournament seeded sixth, matching up in round one with ACCHS, seeded third. The Jays had fallen to ACCHS in the last three matches played of the season — once on Saturday, Oct. 14, and twice on Tuesday, Oct. 17 — and the team came out looking like they did not intend to lose again.

The Jays and Tigers were neck-and-neck through the first game, with the Tigers taking the 24-26 win. The Jays dominated games two and three, defeating ACCHS 25-13 in game two and 25-18 in game three.

Sabetha served well, hitting 68 of 72 attempts for 94.4 percent efficiency. Senior Kymbrie Ulrich and juniors Trista Argabright and Hillary Krebs led the team, all posting perfect serving. Ulrich was 15 of 15, Argabright was 14 of 14 with two aces, and Krebs was 12 of 12 with three aces.

Offensively, the Jays made good on 129 of 149 hitting attempts and tallied 31 kills. Ulrich posted 18 set assists, while Argabright had 10.

Freshman Melinna Schumann led her team, posting 35 of 41 hitting with nine kills.

Sophomore Nikole Kuenzi tallied 34 of 39 with five kills. Sophomore Morgan Schuette had no hitting errors, knocking over all 21 of her attempts, including eight kills. Senior Laurel Smith tallied 18 of 23 hitting with four kills.

Defensively, junior libero Hillary Krebs led her team from the back row — tallying 20 serve receives and 39 digs.

Cassidy Holthaus and Morgan Schuette celebrate a point during Sabetha’s first round Sub State match-up with ACCHS on Saturday, October 21.

Semi-Finals

After the first round win, the Jays moved on to face MH-MA, seeded second. MH-MA had defeated Riverside in the first round. The Jays defeated MH-MA in straight sets, 25-19 and 25-21.

The Jays again served well, hitting 45 of 49 attempts for 91.8 percent efficiency.

Kuenzi hit 13 of 14 serve attempts to lead her team, while teammates Schuette, Krebs and Ulrich were perfect from the line with seven, seven and five good serves, respectively.

Offensively, Sabetha hit 82 of 94 spike attempts and tallied 23 kills. Argabright posted 12 set assists, and Ulrich had 10.

Schumann made good on 29 of 31 hitting attempts, including eight kills. Kuenzi went 20 of 23 with seven kills.

Defensively, Kuenzi posted 13 serve receives. Krebs tallied eight serve receives and 22 digs.

Championship

Sophomore hitter Morgan Schuette makes the hit against this MH-MA blocker during Sub State action Saturday, October 21.

Sabetha moved on to the championship match, facing league foe Nemaha Central. Serving errors plagued the Jays, and they fell in straight sets — 12-25 and 13-25.

Sabetha served just 73.1 percent in the championship match-up, missing seven of 26 attempts. Serving leader was Ulrich, who hit all five of her serve attempts. Also hitting five serves was Schuette, who went five of seven from the line with one ace.

Kuenzi was the go-to hitter, knocking over 16 of 21 attempts and posting one kill. While not hitting as many, Schumann’s spikes proved difficult for the Thunder to dig out, as she posted five kills on just nine good hits.

Defensively, Krebs tallied 24 serve receives and pulled up eight digs.
