Wetmore falls to Frankfort, 38-78

The Wetmore Cardinals welcomed the Frankfort Wildcats to town Friday, Oct. 20, in hopes they could tack another win onto their 3-4 record.

Although the Cardinals found the end zone multiple times, they still suffered their fifth loss of the season, 38-78.

“There were too many big plays and too many mistakes defensively,” said Head Coach Rick Schnacker. “Frankfort has a good young team and they took advantage of our miscues.”

During the first quarter, senior Kyler Vance scored the first touchdown for the Cardinals on a 41-yard run.

Then, junior Joel Hutfles tallied the second touchdown on a 70-yard run. Wetmore held the lead after the first quarter with a score of 12-8.

The Wildcats exploded offensively in the second quarter upping their score by 36 points, while Wetmore tallied two more touchdowns.

The first touchdown was completed by Vance on a 62-yard pass from Hutfles and the second by senior Ethan Osterhaus on a 33-yard pass from Hutfles.

“We played hard and played a good offensive game but we played inconsistently on defense, especially in the second quarter,” Schnacker said. “We put points on the board, but unfortunately we gave up too many as well.”

The Wildcats kept the momentum going in the second half, tacking on 32 more points, while the Cardinals scored two more touchdowns – one in the third and one in the fourth.

In the third, Hutfles completed a 26-yard run, as well as a two point conversion. In the fourth, Vance scored on a 40-yard run.

Hutfles tallied 18 tackles and 20 rushes for 97 yards, while Vance tallied 17 tackles, two catches for 55 yards and 13 rushes for 126 yards.

“I’m proud of these boys and our efforts,” Schnacker said. “We played hard and never quit, but we need to focus on our mistakes and have a good week of practice. Wakefield is another solid team and we need to prepare hard for them.”

The Cardinals will travel to Wakefield Thursday, Oct. 26, for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
