Jays roll over Osage City

The 2017 Sabetha High School football team gather for a photo while holding their 3A Sectional Football Champion plaque after defeating Osage City, 56-13, Friday, November 10.

Sabetha’s turnovers were a concerning factor in the Sectional contest on their home field Friday, Nov. 10, against the 9-2 Osage City Indians. But with the Indians giving up four interceptions and losing a fumble, the Jays’ takeaways evened out their giveaways. Sabetha’s platoon of running backs amassed more than 600 yards on the ground and steamrolled past the Osage City 56-13.

Senior quarterback Brandon Brownlee tries to evade this tackle while carrying the ball down field during the 3A Sectional contest versus Osage City on Friday, November 10.

The Indian’s quarterback Tucker Kimball was intercepted on opening possession of the contest — the first of four for the game — and the Jays took advantage. Sabetha drove 83 yards in eight plays to score on a 1-yard running touchdown by Wyatt Beyer to give his team a 7-0 lead.

Sophomore Gabe Garber skirts around the outside of these tackles as he drives the ball down field during the 3A Sectional contest versus Osage City on Friday, November 10.

On the ensuing possession, the Indians were forced to punt, but it was muffed, and Osage City came up with the possession on the Sabetha 15. Kimball connected with Payton Pearson for 13-yard scoring strike to knot the game at 7-7 midway through first frame. It would remain tied at the end of the quarter.

The Jays had a big second quarter, with Gabe Garber inking two touchdowns from 1 yard and 6 yards, and Brandon Brownlee had a 26-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Gruber near the end of the half to run the score 28-7 at the break.

Sabetha logged 271 total yards in the first half, with Gruber leading his team rushing for 151 yards with 26 yards and a score, with Beyer logging 68.

Junior Mason Engelken runs the ball down the field during the 3A Sectional contest versus Osage City on Friday, November 10.

Osage City totaled 84 yards in the first half, 66 in the air, with the Jays’ defense holding their opponent to an average of 2.7 yards per play while forcing two turnovers.

Sabetha’s running game added 366 yards in the second half, scoring four times with Joel Hackney picking up a pair of touchdowns from 15 and 47 yards out. Mason Engelken matched Hackney’s scoring tally with two touchdowns of his own from 12 and 31 yards.

Senior Brandon Brownlee (No. 12) holds the ball steady for junior kicker Braeden Cox (No. 4), as he kicks this field goal during the 3A Sectional contest versus Osage City on Friday, November 10.

Osage City’s Trenton Plinsky scored for the Indians early in the fourth quarter, but the Jays took the Sectional championship and advanced over the Indians by a score of 56-13.

Sabetha had three rushers (Gruber, Beyer and Hackney) with 100 plus yards, and the backfield combined for 611 yards on the ground. Braeden Cox was a perfect 8-8 in kicking PATs, and Beyer had three interceptions in this dominating win.

Senior Wyatt Beyer (No. 21) leads the way for junior runningback Joe Gruber (No. 10) as he carries the ball down the field during the 3A Sectional contest versus Osage City on Friday, November 10.
