SHS students earn All Big 7 League, All State honors

Twenty-four athletes from Sabetha High School were named in the 2017 fall sports Big 7 League and All State Honors. Those being named with All League or All State Honors are listed below, as well as team and individual achievements for the 2017 fall season.

Football

The Sabetha Bluejays opened their season against Centralia on Sept. 1 and wrapped up the season on Saturday, Nov. 25, against Marysville at the 3A State Championship game. Sabetha would win the 3A State Championship game after defeating Marysville 7-6 in a close nail-biting game. The Bluejays finished the season with a 13-1 record, taking their only loss to Nemaha Central in week seven.

Throughout the 2017 season, the Bluejays tallied 250 first downs, 720 rushes for 4,548 yards, 457 passing yards, 20 completions, 45 passes and 24 interceptions.

Brandon Brownlee

Senior

Defensive Back, All League Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2017 season, Brandon totaled 45 tackles and 60 rushes for 175 yards for the Bluejays. He also tallied four touchdowns.

Cole Oehm

Senior

Defensive End/Outside Linebacker, 1st Team All League; All State Defensive Line (WE); All State Honorable Mention Lineman (TPJ)

Throughout the 2017 season, Cole totaled 69 tackles, one sack, one interception, one fumble recovery and two rushes for 10 yards for the Bluejays.

Isaac Sunderland

Senior

Tight End, All League Honorable Mention; All State Honorable Mention Tight End (TPJ)

Throughout the 2017 season, Isaac totaled 39 tackles, two sacks, and one rush for 2 yards for the Bluejays.

Kyle Grimm

Senior

Offensive Line, 1st Team All League; All State Honorable Mention Offensive Line (WE); All State Honorable Mention Lineman (TPJ)

Throughout the 2017 season, Kyle totaled 19 tackles and one sack for the Bluejays.

Riley Herrmann

Senior

Defense End/Outside Linebacker, All League Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2017 season, Riley totaled 63 tackles, two interceptions,one fumble recovery, and three receptions for 120 yards for the Bluejays. He also tallied three touchdowns.

Wyatt Beyer

Senior

Defensive Back, 1st Team All League; All State Honorable Mention Defensive Back (WE); All State Defensive Back (TPJ)

Throughout the 2017 season, Wyatt totaled 27 tackles, seven interceptions, two receptions for 28 yards, and 127 rushes for 714 yards for the Bluejays. He also tallied 11 touchdowns and two 2-point conversions.

Braeden Cox

Junior

Kicker, 1st Team All League; All State Honorable Mention Kicker (WE); All State Honorable Mention Specialist (TPJl)

Throughout the 2017 season, Braeden totaled six tackles, two interceptions, one catch for five yards for the Bluejays. He also kicked for 63 points this season with 51 point after attempts and four field goals.

Cauy Rokey

Junior

Inside Linebacker, All League Honorable Mention; All State Honorable Mention Linebacker (TPJ)

Throughout the 2017 season, Cauy totaled 103 tackles, two sacks, three blocked kicks and one fumble recovery for the Bluejays.

Elliot Strahm

Junior

Defensive Line, 1st Team All League; Offensive Line, 1st Team All League; All State Offensive Lineman and Honorable Mention Defensive Lineman (WE); All State Defensive Lineman (TPJ); Sports in Kansas 3A Defensive Player of the Year

Throughout the 2017 season, Elliot totaled 69 tackles, four sacks and one fumble recovery for the Bluejays.

Joe Gruber

Junior

Running Back, 1st Team All League; Defensive Back, All League Honorable Mention; Punter, 1st Team All League; All State Honorable Mention Running Back (TPJ, WE)

Throughout the 2017 season, Joe totaled 66 tackles, four interceptions, three fumble recoveries, three receptions for 69 yards and 178 rushes for 1,207 yards for the Bluejays. He also tallied 14 touchdowns and two 2- point conversions.

Mason Engelken

Junior

Running Back, 1st Team All League; All State Honorable Mention Running Back (TPJ, WE)

Throughout the 2017 season, Mason totaled four tackles and 111 rushes for 967 yards for the Bluejays. He also tallied 12 touchdowns and one 2-point conversion.

Gabe Garber

Sophomore

Inside Linebacker, 1st Team All League; Honorable Mention Linebacker (Wichita Eagle); All State Honorable Mention Linebacker (TPJ, WE)

Throughout the 2017 season, Gabe totaled 128 tackles, two sacks, one blocked kick, four interceptions, and 99 rushes for 677 yards for the Bluejays. He also tallied 14 touchdowns and two 2-point conversions.

Volleyball

The Lady Jays opened their season at the Marysville Tournament on Aug. 26, and finished their season against Nemaha Central on Oct. 21 at the Sub-State Tournament. The Jays were Runner Up at the Sub-State Tournament and finished the season with an 11-25 record.

Hillary Krebs

Junior

1st Team All League

As Sabetha’s libero, Hillary tallied 528 defensive digs and 566 serve receives, with an average passing score of 2.36 out of 3. A very strong server for the team, Hillary made good on 95.3 percent of her serves — knocking over a total of 246, of which 32 were aces. She also tallied 20 set assists, and 125 good hits, from the back row, with 15 kills.

Nikole Kuenzi

Sophomore

All League Honorable Mention

As an outside hitter, Nikole tallied 537 good hits and 155 kills. She also had 12 solo blocks and 29 assist blocks. Nikole hit 87.5 percent of her serves on the year, totaling 203 good serves with 16 aces. Defensively, she tallied 192 defensive digs and 473 serve receives, with an average passing score of 1.99 out of 3.

Melinna Schumann

Freshman

1st Team All League

As an outside hitter, Melinna tallied 509 good hits and 150 kills, as well as four solo blocks and 30 assist blocks. From the service line, Melinna tallied 153 good serves with 16 aces, making good of 96.2 percent of her attempts. Additionally, she tallied 88 defensive digs, 149 serve receives and five set assists.

Cross Country

The Sabetha Bluejay Cross Country team opened their season on Aug. 31 at Jeff West and concluded their season by sending both teams to the State Meet on Oct. 28 in Lawrence. Throughout the season, both teams earned first place at the Nemaha Central meet, second place at the Big 7 League Meet, and third at the 3A Regional Meet.

Henry Glynn

Junior

1st Team All League

Throughout the season, Henry competed in every meet. He placed in the top five in five out of the nine meets. His best time for the season was 17 minutes, 11 seconds at the Big 7 League meet in Seneca.

Megan Meyer

Junior

1st Team All League

Throughout the season, Megan competed in every meet. She placed in the top 10 in six out of the nine meets. Her best time of the season was 20 minutes, 38 seconds at the Big 7 League meet in Seneca.

Skylar McAfee

Junior

1st Team All League

Throughout the season, Skylar ran at every meet. She placed 10th overall at the Jeff West meet, ninth at the Big 7 League and Hiawatha meets, third at the Nemaha Central meet and 10th at Regionals. Her best time of the season was 21 minutes, 27 seconds at the Big 7 League meet in Seneca.

Micah Romines

Sophomore

1st Team All League

Throughout the season, Micah ran in every meet. He placed seventh in the Big 7 League meet and 16th at Regionals. His best time for the season was 17 minutes, 48 seconds at Big 7 League meet in Seneca.

Braden Menold

Freshman

All League Honorable Mention

Throughout the season, Braden ran in every meet. He placed 13th at the Big 7 League meet, and finished with his best time of the season of 18 minutes, 15 seconds.

Charlie Bestwick

Freshman

All League Honorable Mention

Throughout the season, Charlie competed in every meet. He placed 14th at the Big 7 League meet, and finished with his best time of the season of 18 minutes, 19 seconds.

Hattie Lukert

Freshman

1st Team All League, All State Honorable Mention

Throughout the season, Hattie ran in every competition, gradually improving as the season continued. She placed in the top 10 in five out of the nine meets. She also placed 16th at the State competition. Her best time of the season was 20 minutes, 30 seconds at the Big 7 League meet in Seneca.

Kaden Dillon

Freshman

1st Team All League

Throughout the season, Kaden competed in eight of the nine meets. He placed 15th at Regionals, 11th at Horton and Hiawatha, 15th at Jeff West fifth at the Big 7 League meet, where he finished with his best time of the season, 18 minutes, 35 seconds..

Kenzie Meyer

Freshman

All League Honorable Mention

Throughout the season, Kenzie competed in every meet. She placed 10th overall at the Nemaha Central meet and 15th the Big 7 meet in Seneca where she completed with a time of 22 minutes, 12 seconds.

Tennis

The Lady Jays Tennis team opened their season on Aug. 24 in Wamego and concluded their season by sending one doubles team –comprised of sophomores Hannah Wertenberger and Kinsey Menold – and singles player Kirsten Wenger to the State Tournament in Prairie Village on Oct. 13 and 14. Wertenberger and Menold finished their season with a record of 4-9 and Wenger ended the season with a record of 17-10.
