Jay grapplers close out 2017 portion of season

Senior 145-pound Brandon Brownlee pins his Holton opponent in the first period of their bout on Thursday, December 14.

The Sabetha Bluejay wrestling squad closed out the 2017 portion of this year’s wrestling schedule with a dual meet against the Holton Wildcats on Thursday, Dec. 14, in Sabetha. The Wildcats defeated the Bluejays 63-15.

Freshman 126-pound Michael Gugelman tries to hold off this single-leg takedown against his Holton opponent during their bout on Thursday, December 14.

“There were not a lot of positives tonight,” said Head Coach Ricky Creek. “This is a tough dual to wrestle because the kids have trouble focusing knowing the Christmas break is just around the corner. We need a break right now so this comes at just the right time. We will come back after the break ready to go.”

Junior 285-pound Elliot Strahm attempts to keep this Holton opponent to the mat during their bout on Thursday, December 14.

Freshman 113-pound Kaden Dillon continues to shine for the Jays with a 6-0 decision against Jake Barnes.

Senior 145-pound Brandon Brownlee pinned Eduardo Rodriguez in the first period after scoring with a takedown and a 2-point near fall. It was Brownlee’s first action on the mat this year.

“I was really hungry to get out there tonight and do something for the team,” Brownlee said. “I missed the tournament last week because I was taking the ACT exam, so it felt good to get out there and wrestle.”

“This is my senior year, so I am not holding anything back,” Brownlee said. “This is the last time I will get to wrestle so I have to make the most of it. I am one of only two seniors on the team, and the two of us are really trying to lead these guys and get through to them what it takes to win.”

Junior 152-pound Kamden Brownlee stands up and attempts to escape his Holton opponent during their bout on Thursday, December 14.

The Jays will be back on the mat for the Rossville Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018.
