Letter to the Editor: Digital devices could damage children’s eyesight

Dear Editor,

I saw an article on CBS News about new research that finds school-aged kids who spent seven hours or more a week using computers or mobile video games tripled their risk for nearsightedness, and I thought it was worth sharing. To me, it is scary that we keep pushing people towards “technology.” My first grader is using a touch screen unit in school and when I read articles like this it makes me wonder how wise it is to push this learning medium on our young children. We will not really know the full impact until another 50 years from now. We as humans are so quick to jump on the marketing band wagon or adapt something that is “cool” or “makes life easy.” Typically so we can jump on the couch and watch the ball game or some sitcom and eat snacks and zero calorie drinks.
