Junior 285-pound Elliot Strahm controls Brian Shane of Royal Valley during their championship match at the Rossville Invitational Saturday, January 6.

Freshman 113-pound Kaden Dillon ran his season record to 16-0 on his way to winning the gold medal with all of his victories coming by falls. Dillon pinned Curtis Hansen of Riley County in the first period to open the tournament. In the second round, Dillon pinned Brydon Shoemaker of Clay Center, and in the third round he pinned Brodie Page of Atchison. This win placed Dillon in the finals against Layne Hurla of Rossville, who came into the tournament with a 13-4 record. Dillon pinned Hurla in the second period to claim the championship.

The second gold medal went to junior 285-pound Elliot Strahm. Strahm entered the tournament with a 9-3 record. He pinned Dallas Buss of Riley County in his first bout. In his second bout, Strahm pinned Kyle Bonham of Perry-Lecompton. This win propelled Strahm into the finals against Brian Shane of Royal Valley. Strahm walked away with the gold medal with a 7-0 decision over Shane.

Freshman 113-pound Kaden Dillon pins Brydon Shumaker of Clay Center during this second round bout at the Rossville Invitational Saturday, January 6.

Senior 145-pound Brandon Brownlee and junior 195-pound Cauy Rokey both placed second and took home silver medals.

Sophomore 132-pound Braden Mitchell, junior 152-pound Kamden Brownlee, and sophomore 160-pound Walker Lowdermilk each took third place in the tournament.

Sophomore 170-pound Colby Tinklin placed fourth in the tournament.

“I have never experienced the level of heart the kids wrestled with today,” said Head Coach Ricky Creek. “These kids fought through injuries, tough calls, bad seeds and overtime matches. It was one of the most entertaining tournaments I have ever experienced!”

“We talked all week about the importance of the tournament in regards to regionals. Other than two or three teams, this tournament was representative of our regional tournament,” he said. “The kids rose to the occasion. We have room for improvement on our technique, but our mental toughness and aggressiveness was the key to our placing eight kids in the tourney with two champions. It is such a great feeling when the things we practice on are executed and we get our hand raised!”

The Jays’ next action will be on Thursday, Jan. 11, at Falls City, Neb., and on Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Marysville Tournament.
