Jay grapplers defeat Tigers

Senior 182-pound Tanner Ukele pins his Falls City opponent during their bout on Tuesday, January 23.

The Sabetha Bluejay wrestling squad traveled to Falls City, Neb., on Tuesday, Jan. 23, to dual with the Falls City Tigers. The Jays controlled the dual meet, winning eight of the 10 matches wrestled.

Sophomore 160-pound Walker Lowdermilk pins his Falls City opponent during their bout Tuesday, January 23.

“We needed a little slower type of action tonight,” said Head Coach Ricky Creek. “We have just gone through the toughest part of our season. This single dual meet is just what we needed to help us rest up a little and get our confidence back. We wrestled well and with it only being one dual this evening it allowed us to relax a little.”

The Jays wrestled Tuesday evening without junior 195-pound Cauy Rokey, who was lost for the season with a knee injury suffered at the Holton Tournament the previous Saturday.

“It was tough losing Cauy,” Creek said. “We depend on his leadership, but this team will step up and keep moving forward. That is what a good team does and that is how we coach them.”

Sophomore 220-pound Carson Ukele works to roll his Falls City opponent to his back during their bout on Tuesday, January 23.

Junior 285-pound Elliot Strahm continued his winning ways with a first period pin of senior Brandon Banks.

“I had been working on a new move that one of the coaches showed me, and I used it tonight and just dropped him to the mat,” Strahm said.

Sophomore 132-pound Braden Mitchell hooks the arm of his Falls City opponent during their bout on Tuesday, January 23.
