Jay grapplers win double dual

Freshman 113-pound Kaden Dillon, who wrestled up at 120 pounds uses a cradle to put his opponent on his back during their bout on Thursday, January 25, at Jeff West.

The Sabetha Bluejays wrestling team traveled to Jeff West on Thursday, Jan. 25, to compete against the Jeff West Tigers and the Atchison Redmen. The Jays defeated the Tigers, 51-18, in the opening dual and defeated the Redmen, 46-24, in the following dual.

Sophomore 160-pound Walker Lowdermilk who wrestled up at 170-pounds lifts his Jeff West opponent off the mat before taking him down during their bout on Thursday, January 25, at Jeff West.

“We wrestled really well tonight,” said Assistant Coach Hunter Howerton. “We are getting a lot of the little things in our technique fixed right now, and it is really showing up on the mat.”

“We are having fun in the practice room and these last two weeks here are a little slower pace which is allowing us to heal up a little and to relax and enjoy the season,” Howerton said. “We will begin the big push to the end of our season shortly and the kids are progressing to that end goal nicely. I really like where we are right now.”

Senior 145-pound Brandon Brownlee controls his Jeff West opponent in route to a 4-2 victory at Jeff West Thursday, January 25.

Freshman 113-pound Kaden Dillon picked up another big win for the Jays in a match where he bumped up to wrestle at 120 pounds.

“This season has been different for me, because I played football and ran cross country so by the time wrestling season rolled around I was feeling a little tired and sore,” Dillon said. “I know what I need to do, so I just go out and work through it and get it done. I just do what I need to do to be successful.”

The Jays’ next action will be Thursday, Feb. 1, at Onaga, followed by a tournament at Onaga on Friday, Feb. 2.
