Sabetha dominates Perry on the hardwoods

Sophomore Maggi Hughes drives inside during the varsity girls’ game on Tuesday, January 30, versus the Perry-Lecompton Kaws.

The Sabetha High School Lady Jays and the Perry-Lecompton Kaws met early in the season with Sabetha taking the narrow, road victory in the early season.

Senior Hannah Enneking drives inside during the varsity girls’ game on Tuesday, January 30, versus the Perry-Lecompton Kaws.

The sequel would be played at home, and the Jays would jump all over their guests, trailed only once in the first quarter, and took the preemptory victory 42-21.

Sophomore Kinley Schuette takes this shot from behind the arc during the girls’ basketball versus Perry-Lecompton on Tuesday, January 30.

Skylar McAfee posted the first points of the contest giving her team the early lead with the bucket and the bonus to give her team the 3-0 advantage. Perry answered with a pair of quick strikes to jump ahead 4-3, but the Jays would finish the frame on a 13-3 run to give them a 16-7 lead at the end of the first.

“I thought we were aggressive but disciplined on offense,” said Head Coach Alex McAfee. “We got to the rim versus their man defense.”

S. McAfee would lead her team in scoring in the first half with 7 points. Hillary Krebs and Hannah Wertenberger had 4 points apiece, and Sabetha would lead 25-12 at the intermission.

The Kaws were held to single digit scoring in every quarter of the contest with a staunch Sabetha man-to-man defense.

“I thought we played with good discipline on defense by keeping them out of the lane on the dribble drives and boxing them off of the boards,” Coach McAfee said. “Another key was keeping them off of the free line.”

The Jays had just nine team fouls and sent Perry to the line on just one occasion.

Sabetha led 32-17 at the end of the third as both teams guarded the lane with continued man defense. The Jays outscored their guest 10-4 in the fourth quarter, with six players inking points in the final eight minutes. Sabetha would go on to take the easy win, 42-21, over Perry in this last regular season meeting between the two teams.

“We were extremely pleased with our mental and physical effort,” Coach McAfee said.

Junior Hillary Krebs takes this layup shot in the girls’ basketball versus Perry-Lecompton on Tuesday, January 30.

S. McAfee finished the game with a team leading 11 points with Hillary Krebs tallying 7, and Morgan Schuette and Melinna Schumann accounting for 5 points apiece.
