Minister Speaks: Jesus is coming!

Yes, Jesus is coming. As the apostles watched Jesus ascend into heaven, they were told by two “men” who stood by them in white robes. “This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:10-11)

Just as sure as I am that Jesus is coming again, I am also just as sure that only God knows when that will occur. For the rest of us, it will be a surprise. Jesus Himself said of that return “But concerning that day and hour no ones knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.” (Matthew 24:36) Jesus will come like a thief in the night — unexpected. (I Thessalonians 5:2; 2 Peter 3:10; Matthew 24:43-44)

Jesus will not return to do what is so broadly taught in the old religious world. He will not come to establish His kingdom. In fact, there is no indication in Scripture that He will ever actually set foot on this earth when He comes again. The kingdom began on the day of Pentecost following the resurrection of Jesus. The Holy Spirit came on the apostles on that day and the first recorded gospel sermon was preached then and some 3,000 folks responded to that preaching and were immersed in water for the taking away of their sins. (Acts 2:36-41)

We read later in Colossians 1:13 that the kingdom was then in existence. I Corinthians 15:24 tells us that the kingdom will be delivered to the Father when the end comes — when Jesus returns.

We know Jesus will return, we know it will not be to establish His kingdom as He did that at His first coming, and we know that the time of his coming is unknown to us. What will Jesus do when He returns?

The inspired apostle Paul tells us in 2 Thessalonians 1:6-9 that “since indeed God considers it just to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to grant relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels inflaming fire inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His might…”

On the other hand, the apostle Paul tells us in I Thessalonians 4:16-17, “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command and with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ shall rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and so we will always be with the Lord.”

Peter tells us in 2 Peter 3:10-11 that the return of the Lord will also see the utter destruction of creation.

Other than what has been revealed in the Scriptures cited in this essay, we are ignorant of the events surrounding the second coming. The one most important thing for us to remember about that event is to be spiritually prepared for it. When He comes, the time to prepare will end and eternity will begin. God is merciful today, at the coming of Christ, justice will prevail.

It’s going to be a glorious day for those “in Christ” at the coming of Christ. It is going to be a horrible day for those not in Christ. Why not make preparation before it is too late.

Read the Gospels to learn that Jesus Christ came the first time to give His life on the cross for the sins of the world. Read the book of Acts to learn how to access the saving grace of Christ, and read the epistles to learn how to live as a Christian.

May good bless you in your search for truth.
