The Sabetha High School pep crowd watches as junior Hillary Krebs takes this three-point shot on Tuesday, February 27, during opening round action of Sub-State against the Horton Chargers.

A new season began for the Lady Jays last Tuesday, Feb. 27, with the tipoff of the Sub-State tournament and Sabetha hosting the 8-12 Horton Lady Chargers in opening round action. The Jays had a sluggish start and trailed in the first half, but edged out their opponent in the second half to take the win 40-34.

Kinley Schuette opened the scoring in the first few seconds of the contest with a triple to put the Jays on top early. Horton would answer with a three of their own to tie the game and scored eight unanswered through the next seven minutes of the quarter. A late Jessica Payne bucket broke the drought, but Sabetha trailed 8-5 after the first.

Junior Jessica Payne hangs onto the ball as she fights two Horton Chargers for this rebound on Tuesday, February 27, during opening round action of Sub-State.

Five players posted points for the Bluejays in the second quarter in an effort to gain the lead. Sabetha would outscore their guest 10-9 in the second quarter to pull them within a bucket, 17-15, at the intermission. Payne and Hillary Krebs would lead their team with 4 points each in the first half.

“This was a very scrappy, physical team that came ready to play,” said Coach Head Coach Alex McAfee. “We made some adjustments with our toughness, defensive focus, rebounding and offensive execution in the second half.”

Kaitlyn McAfee of Horton had a pair of treys in the third quarter to give her 11 points in the first three frames. But Sabetha’s answer to this was Melinna Schumann, who buried a pair of triples for 6 points; and Skylar McAfee, who was fierce in the paint and inked 5 points. The Jays led 30-25 headed into the final frame.

In the fourth, Schumann added two more treys and swished two free throws for 8 points to help stretch the lead. Horton was forced to foul in order to gain possession in the closing minutes, which led to three Charger players fouling out. The Lady Jays held on to take the win 40-34.

“Offensively, we found the hot hand and got some buckets,” said Coach McAfee of Schumann’s four treys and 15 points. “This was a tough, physical, hard fought win.”
