SHS athletes earn All State, All Big 7 League honors

Nine athletes from Sabetha High School were named in the 2017-18 winter sports Big 7 League and All State Honors. Those named with All League or All State Honors are listed below, as well as team and individual achievements for the 2017-18 winter season.

Girls’ Basketball

The Lady Jays opened their season on Nov. 30, 2017, against Riverside and wrapped up the season against Nemaha Central on Friday, March 2.

The Lady Jays claimed a third place finish at their mid-season tournament in Burlington. The Lady Jays then wrapped up their season with an 11-10 record after falling to Nemaha Central in the semi-final game of the 3A Sub-State Tournament.

Throughout the 2017-18 season, the Lady Jays tallied 818 points, 516 rebounds, 173 assists and 151 steals.

Hillary Krebs

Junior

All League Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2017-18 season, Hillary totaled 148 points, 59 rebounds, 37 assists and 25 steals. She shot 35.42 percent from two-point range, 28.57 percent from the three-point range and 64.29 percent from the free throw line.

Boys’ Basketball

The Bluejays opened their season on Nov. 30, 2017, against Riverside and wrapped up the season against Nemaha Central on Thursday, March 1.

The Bluejays brought home a third place finish at their mid-season tournament in Burlington. The Bluejays then finished their season with an 13-8 record after falling to Nemaha Central in the semi-final game of the 3A Sub-State Tournament.

Throughout the 2017-18 season, the Bluejays tallied 1,075 points, 590 rebounds, 286 assists and 166 steals.

Brett Stallbaumer

Senior

1st Team All League

Throughout the 2017-18 season, Brett totaled 228 points, 42 rebounds, 40 assists and 19 steals. He shot 41.67 percent from two-point range, 44.55 percent from the three-point range and 65.63 percent from the free throw line.

Joe Gruber

Junior

All League Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2017-18 season, Joe totaled 136 points, 53 rebounds, 61 assists and 30 steals. He shot 42.74 percent from two-point range, 16.67 percent from the three-point range and 65.63 percent from the free throw line.

Wrestling

The Bluejays grapplers opened their season on Dec. 7, 2017, in a dual against Rockport and Auburn, and concluded their season by sending four grapplers to the 3-2-1A State Championships on Feb. 24 and 25. During the season, the Bluejays also claimed third place at the Sabetha Wrestling Dual Championship, first at the Rossville Invitational and fourth in the Big 7 League Tournament.

Brandon Brownlee

Senior

All League Honorable Mention

Brandon, 145 pounds, finished the 2017-18 season with a record of 24-8. During the season, he placed first the Onaga Dual Tournament, second at the Rossville Tournament, the Big 7 League Tournament and the 3-2-1A Regional Tournament and third at the JayHusker Tournament in Marysville. Brandon also made his second appearance at the 3-2-1A State Championships.

Kamden Brownlee

Junior

All League

Kamden, 152 pounds, finished the 2017-18 season with a record of 29-13. During the season, he placed first at the Onaga Dual and the Big 7 League Tournaments. Kamden earned a third place finish at the Rossville Tournament, and fourth at the Holton Sadowski and fourth at the 3-2-1A Regional Tournament. Kamden also was a first-time qualifier for the 3-2-1A State Championships.

Elliot Strahm

Junior

All State, All League Honorable Mention

Elliot, 285 pounds, finished the 2017-18 season with a record of 39-8 and was crowned the 3-2-1A State Champion in the 285-pound bracket. During the season he also placed first at the Onaga Dual, Rossville Tournament and the 3-2-1A Regional Tournament. He claimed second place at the Holton Sadowski and at the Big 7 League Tournament, and fourth at the JayHusker Tournament in Marysville. Elliot made his second appearance at the 3-2-1A State Championships.

Walker Lowdermilk

Sophomore

All League Honorable Mention

Walker, 160 pounds, finished the 2017-18 season with a record of 30-12. During the season, he placed first at the Sabetha Dual Tournament, second at the Big 7 League and Onaga Dual Tournaments, third at the Rossville Tournament, and fourth at the JayHusker Tournament in Marysville.

Carson Ukele

Sophomore

All League Honorable Mention

Carson, 195 pounds, finished the 2017-18 season with a record of 18-5. During the season, he placed second at the Onaga Dual and Big 7 League Tournaments.

Kaden Dillon

Freshman

All League

Kaden, 113 pounds, finished the 2017-18 season with a record of 39-6. During the season, he placed second at the Riley County Tournament, first at the Sabetha Tournament, fourth at the Rossville Tournament, second at the Holton Tournament, third at the Regional Tournament and sixth at State Championships.
