Derek Surdez receives residency match
Submitted by KU Med
Derek Surdez received a residency match to University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita, in Family Medicine. Surdez, a Sabetha High School graduate, was among 79 fourth-year medical students participating in Match Day 2018 on March 16, at Wichita Botanica.
During their fourth year, medical students interview with residency programs for training opportunities in the medical specialty of their choice. Students rank the programs, while programs rank the students. Starting at 11 a.m., all across the country, medical students learn the destination of their residency training.
The University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita is nationally recognized as a pioneer in community-oriented medical education. Of the 79 soon-to-be graduates, 32 will be staying in Kansas. Approximately half of this year’s graduates will go into a primary care field (family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics).
