Gerald “Jerry” Tanking, 75, of Liberal, died on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at the V.A. Hospital in Amarillo, Texas.
He was born on Feb. 27, 1943, to Alfred and Catherine (Runnebaum) Tanking at Seneca. On May 16, 1970, he married Jill Randall at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Liberal. She survives.
Jerry was a graduate of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School in Seneca. He was a lifelong farmer. He enjoyed raising livestock and crops, helping other local farmers and was an avid hunter and was owner of Sands Motel for Yellow Freight in Liberal. He was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and member of the ELKS, American Legion and VFW. He was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Liberal.
Jerry also is survived by two sons, Terry (Kim) Tanking and Todd (Mandy) Tanking, all of Liberal; five grandchildren, Kaleb and Ridge Tanking, Skyler and Jaden Lee and Jett Brown; brother, Elmer Tanking of Tonganoxie; and sisters, Alda Frey of Chandler, Ariz., Eileen Meyers of Sabetha and Jeri Ann Matzke of Silver Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Johnny and Regis.
Viewing will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, March 23, at Miller Mortuary in Liberal. Vigil Rosary Service will be at 5 p.m. Friday at the Miller Mortuary Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at the St Anthony Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the Liberal City Cemetery.
