U.S. 36 Highway Association: Multiple local members honored

Submitted

The US 36 Highway Association Inc., formed in Belleville in March 1913. It became incorporated July 12, 1968! Celebrating 105 years and 50 years of incorporation didn’t happen by itself. In each of the thirteen counties across the state, businesses and community people annually support with their membership.

For example, in 1964, Gene Buser served as president of the Association. Currently, Sabetha’s Chamber Director Gina Murchison, and Seneca’s Chamber Director Kylee Luckeroth represent Nemaha County on the Association’s Board of Directors. More than 30 businesses and organizations in Nemaha County support the Association. While many organizations are subsidized by grants and government funding, this Association remains funded by annual memberships and individual donations.

For 105 years, the mission of the organization has focused on promoting the use of this historic highway to bring commerce and tourism to your doorstep! As a Board member once said, “U.S. 36 may be a federal highway, but it is Kansas’ Main Street!”

In keeping with the mission statement, Treasure Hunt was launched September 2006. This annual event held on the third weekend of September for antique, estate and garage sales from Colorado to Missouri was first met with doubtful minds! But each year, more people come!

In 2017, the website’s stats revealed more than 100,000 aggregate hits to its pages. Starting Sept. 1, participating town coordinators and chamber offices begin posting maps and sales lists. Those who travel from Florida, Oregon, California, Louisiana, Wisconsin and Vermont (to name a few) start planning and plotting their buying frenzies!

Today, the Association’s leadership and Board members from each county communicate with KDOT’s district engineers and legislators on maintenance and projects. Traditionally, district engineers, legislators and special guests make presentations at the Association’s June meeting. This year, Marysville will host the annual meeting. Members and public are encouraged to attend. Details about the meeting will begin to appear on the US 36 website @ www.ushwy36.com and its Facebook page in May 2018.
