Lauren Payne takes gold in national Taekwondo competition
Lauren Payne, a Sabetha High School 2016 graduate, recently entered competition in the National Collegiate Taekwondo Association’s national tournament in Washington, D.C.
The tournament was held April 6-8 at American University’s Bender Arena. Payne was one of three participants attending from Kansas State University’s Taekwondo Club.
Payne took the gold medal in her division, placing first in the field of 11 athletes in the yellow belt, middle/heavy weight division. At this level of competition, points are scored using electronic sensory equipment, known as Daedo gear, which measures force contact at certain specific target points. Matches are three one-minute rounds and scoring is the total of all rounds.
After decisively defeating her opponents in the first three matches of competition, Payne managed to overcome the last challenger in the championship match with a winning score of 15-12 to bring home the gold medal.
Payne has been a member of the K-State team for only two years, and this was her second tournament competition.
