SHS Track and Field: Kyle Grimm breaks school record

Senior Kyle Grimm snags first place and breaks a school record in the javelin competition with a throw of 181 feet, 9 inches at the Big 7 Quad on Tuesday, April 24.

It was a record-breaking meet for senior Kyle Grimm at the Big 7 Quad hosted by Sabetha High School on Tuesday, April 24. Grimm had a throw of 181 feet, 9 inches, breaking the new-style javelin record set by Treavor Schmelzle in 2015. Schmelzle’s record was 170 feet, 1 inch.

“The javelin was restructured several years ago to restrict the distance, so we actually have two school records,” said Head Coach Dave Remmers. “The grip on the javelin was moved forward slightly to change the center of gravity, thus causing the javelin to ‘turn over’ sooner and result in shorter throws. The idea was to cut approximately 20 percent off the former distances.”

The old-style record was set by Matt Garber in 1988 at 210 feet, 10 inches.

Boys

The boys’ team claimed second in the meet with 71 points. Other teams placing in the boys’ competition were Nemaha Central, first; Holton, third; Jeff West, fourth; and Riverside, fifth.

Sophomore Micah Romines hands off the baton to junior Braeden Cox in the 4×800-meter relay at the Big 7 Quad on Tuesday, April 24.
Junior Skylar McAfee takes the handoff from sophomore teammate Nikole Kuenzi during the 4×800-meter relay at the Big 7 Quad on Tuesday, April 24. The team took first.

In individual events, Grimm took first in the javelin and junior Braeden Cox finished first in the high jump with a 6 feet, 2 inches. Other first-place finishers at the meet included the 4×400-meter and 4×800-meter relay teams.

The 4×400-meter team consisted of juniors Cox, Mason Engelken and Henry Glynn and sophomore Micah Romines. The team finished with a time of 3:35.89. The 4×800-meter team consisted of Cox, Glynn, Romines and freshman Kaden Dillon and finished with a time of 9:09.10.

Girls

The girls’ team took third in the event with 51 points. Other teams placing were Nemaha Central, first; Jeff West, second; Holton, fourth; and Riverside, fifth.

The 4×800-meter relay team took first with a time of 10:44. The team consisted of freshman Hattie Lukert, sophomores Hannah Wertenberger and Nikole Kuenzi and junior Skylar McAfee.

“This was a good meet for us to experiment with some kids in different events,” Remmers said. “We are trying to get ourselves positioned for the League, Regional and State track meets, and we were able to get several questions answered.”
