SHS Track and Field: Athletes record personal bests at Sabetha Invitational

Junior Skylar McAfee heads to the finish line during the 800-meter run at the Sabetha Invitational held on Friday, May 4. McAfee finished first in the event. Freshman Hattie Lukert, who is pictured behind, finished third.

The warm, sunny afternoon was a welcome sight to the Sabetha Track and Field teams on Friday, May 4, as they played host to nine teams for the Sabetha Invitational. Rain delayed and eventually postponed the meet originally planned for Thursday, May 3.

“We were happy to finally get the meet in, even though a couple of schools were unable to return, and several athletes were unable to attend,” said Head Coach Dave Remmers. “The meet was still very competitive, and we had several personal bests recorded. All of our girls’ relays set personal bests this season, so that is exciting that we are dropping our times at this point in the season.”

Boys

The boys’ team finished fifth as a team with 69 points. Other teams placing included Nemaha Central, first; Marysville, second; Auburn, third; Falls City, fourth; Centralia, sixth; Horton, seventh; and Kickapoo Nation and Riverside tied for eighth.

Sophomore Micah Romines took first in the 400-meter dash and recorded a season best time of 53 seconds.

Also earning first was the 4×800-meter relay team of Romines, senior Braeden Cox and freshmen Kaden Dillon and Charlie Bestwick.

Girls

The girls’ team took third in the meet with 88 points. Other teams placing included Nemaha Central, first; Auburn, second; Centralia, fourth; Marysville, fifth; Falls City, sixth; Horton, seventh; and Kickapoo Nation and Riverside tied for eighth.

Junior Skylar McAfee took first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:35.07. In high jump, junior Megan Meyer took first with a jump of 4 feet, 11 inches.

Also taking first were the 4×400-meter and 4×800-meter relay teams. The 4×400-meter team consisted of McAfee, freshman Hattie Lukert and sophomores Morgan Schuette and Kinley Schuette had their best time of 4:16.56. The 4×800-meter team consisting of McAfee, Lukert, junior Hunter Lowdermilk and sophomore Nikole Kuenzi finished with their best time of 10:20.98.

The track and field teams travel to Royal Valley on Thursday, May 10, for the Big 7 League meet.
