SHS Track and Field: Mason Engelken breaks school record in 300-meter hurdles

Sabetha’s trip to the Big 7 League Track and Field meet at Royal Valley on Thursday, May 10, resulted in junior Mason Engelken breaking a school record in the 300-meter hurdle competition and tying a school record in the 110-meter competition. Engelken finished with a time of 39.37 seconds in the 300-meter race — defeating the record of 40.6 seconds set by Doug Allen in 1981. He finished the 110-meter race with a time of 14.64 seconds, which ties the record set by Jasper Frazee in 1997.

Several other athletes recording personal bests in their events. The boys’ team took fourth, and the girls’ team took third.

Other teams placing in the boys’ competition included Perry-Lecompton, first; Nemaha Central, second; Royal Valley, third; Holton, fifth; Hiawatha, sixth; Jefferson West, seventh; Atchison County, eighth; and Riverside, ninth.

Other teams placing in the girls’ competition included Nemaha Central, first; Jefferson West, second; Royal Valley, fourth; Perry-Lecompton, fifth; Holton, sixth; Hiawatha, seventh; Atchison County, eighth; and Riverside, ninth.

“We asked the kids to do their best for the team for the league meet, since we really don’t talk about team points throughout the season,” said Head Coach Dave Remmers. “The kids responded extremely well, and recorded several personal bests — including Mason Engelken breaking one school record and tying another in hurdles. Our coaching staff was extremely pleased with how they accepted the challenge to compete for team points.”

Boys

In the boys’ individual events, Engelken swept the hurdles competitions.

Junior Elliot Strahm also took first in the shot put competition with a put of 43 feet, 8.75 inches — a season best for him.

Girls

In the individual competitions, freshman Hattie Lukert finished in the top spot in the 400-meter dash with a time of 61.80.

The 4×400-meter and 4×800-meter relay teams both also finished first in their competitions. The 4×400-meter team consisted of Lukert, sophomores Kinley Schuette and Morgan Schuette and junior Skylar McAfee. Their time was 4:15.88. The 4×800-meter team consisted of Lukert, McAfee, sophomore Nikole Kuenzi and junior Hunter Lowdermilk. Their time was 10:15.05.

The track and field teams will travel to St. Marys for Regionals on Friday, May 18. The top four placers in each event at Regionals will advance to the State Track and Field Championships in Wichita on Friday and Saturday, May 25 and 26.
