Lobos defeat Ottawa 2-1 in series

The Sabetha Lobos started their third season off with a home series against Ottawa. The Lobos let the River Bandits grab game one by a score of 16-15, but came back in games two and three, earning their first wins of the season 18-9 and 10-0, respectively.

Game one

The Lobos started off strong in game one on Thursday, May 31, tallying one run in both the first and third innings, while the Lobos’ defense held Ottawa scoreless. Ottawa got the bats going in the third, though scoring seven runs and then another two in the fifth. The Lobos slowly notched their way back and scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Lobos offense was led by Trae Bobo, Charley Harper, Luis Quiñones, Kevin Ruiz and Luis Samayoa, who all drove in runs throughout the inning. The score was tied heading into the seventh, 9-9.

The Lobos grabbed the lead again scoring another run in the seventh, and four in the ninth, while Ottawa scored four in the eighth and one in the ninth. The game would head into extra innings after the score was tied 14-14 at the end of nine. Ottawa would win the game though after they scored two runs in the tenth, while Sabetha only scored one. Ottawa would win 16-15.

Sabetha tallied 13 hits on the day, with Elliott Antonetty grabbing two home runs, while Bobo managed one. Antonetty, Bobo and Samayoa led the Lobos with three hits apiece. Antonetty also tallied five RBIs for the day.

Junior Figueroa started on the mound for the Lobos. He went three innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits, while striking out three batters and only walking two.

He was relieved by Diego Martinez who also pitched three innings. He surrendered two runs on three hits, while striking out four batters and walking two.

Martinez was relieved by Brandon Gonzalez who pitched 1-2/3 innings. He allowed one run on one hit, while striking out one batter and walking one.

Juan Perdomos came in on relief to finish the game. He pitched the final 2-1/3 innings, surrendering six runs on five hits, while striking out three batters and walking five.

Game two

On Thursday, June 1, the Lobos and River Bandits each tallied two runs during the first inning but Ottawa would take the lead in the second with another three runs, while the Lobos only managed one. Sabetha came back in the fifth when Trae Bobo hit a home run driving in three of the four runs for the inning.

The Lobos’ defense held the River Bandits to scoring only one run in the fifth and sixth, and two in the eighth, while Sabetha extended their lead by another eight runs in the seventh and three in the eighth. The Lobos would win game two, 18-9.

Sabetha was led offensively by Luis Samayoa who went four for five on the day and Aaron Fuller who went three for four on the day. Samayoa had two doubles, while Fuller had one.

Samayoa, Bobo and Carlos Reynoso each tallied three RBIs for the day.

Eduar Brito started on the mound for the Lobos. He pitched six innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits, while striking out two runners and walking five.

Brito was relieved by Jose Suero, who pitched the final three innings, surrendering two runs on three hits, while striking out three batters.

Game three

In game three on Saturday, June 2, the Lobos took the early lead with four runs in the first inning, with two of those runs coming from Antonetty hitting a home run. The Lobos continued to collect runs throughout the game, while Ottawa managed only three hits but couldn’t advance any runners around the base. The Lobos would win game three, 10-0.

Antonetty, Bobo and Quiñones each went two for four on the day, with Antonetty collecting three RBIs.

Dalton VanHoutan started on the mound for the Lobos. He pitched a solid six innings, allowing no runs on two hits, while striking out four batters.

VanHoutan was relieved by Junior Figueroa, who pitched the final inning, allowing zero runs on one hit, while striking out one batter.

The Lobos win the series 2-1.
