Democrats to host dinner for primary candidates

Submitted by JoLene Rae Bloom Nemaha County Democrats

As per the Nemaha County Democrats’ Mission Statement, to be informed, citizens need to meet the candidates and hear their positions prior to the primary election on Tuesday, Aug. 7.

To meet that need, the Nemaha County Democrats are hosting a social at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, for the party’s filed candidates who will appear on the Primary Ballot.

The social and pork chop dinner will be held at Stallbaumer’s Community Room, 1701 North Street in Seneca (located behind the Sleep Inn on the western edge of Seneca on U.S. Highway 36).

During the social and meal, attendees can place silent bids for various auction items that have been donated, including Americana items, quilts and bedding, patriotic yard art, food, and various services. Individuals will place bids for the items, and if, at the end of the auction period persons have the highest bids, the items will become theirs. A designated time for the close of the auction will be announced before bidding ends.

The meal will be followed by introductions of all the candidates, who will be allowed time to introduce themselves and share their reasons and goals for running for the various offices. A short period of time will be allowed for questions to be asked of the candidates.

The following candidates have been invited: for U.S. Congress, Second District — Paul Davis; for Governor/Lt. Governor — Arden Anderson and Dale Cosert, Jack Bergeson and Alexander Cline, Carl Brewer and Chris Morrow, Laura Kelly and Lynn Rogers, and Josh Svaty and Katrina Lewison; for Secretary of State — Brian McClendon; for State Treasurer — Marci Francisco; for Attorney General — Sarah Swain; for Kansas Commissioner of Insurance — Nathaniel McLaughlin; for House of Representatives, District 62 — Mel Baker.

If a candidate cannot attend due to conflicts, a designated representative of the campaigns will be allowed to speak on behalf of the absent candidate.

A donation of $20 per person will finance the meals of the visiting candidates and attendees, who will enjoy a buffet meal of garden salad, smoked pork chop, cheesy potatoes, green beans, roll and beverages. Reservations for the evening should be reserved by Saturday, June 16, by contacting Nemaha County Democratic Chair JoLene Bloom at 785-336-3641 or

For tickets, contact Bloom, Don Honig, Lois and Jody Kuckelman, Jim and Judy Glynn, Bruce and Judy Larkin, Mel Baker or Greg Newlin.
