Sabetha businesses named finalists for statewide award
Winners of the Governor’s Exporter of the Year and Award of Excellence awards were announced Wednesday, June 6, at the Team Kansas Banquet in Lawrence. The awards were presented by Kansas Governor Jeff Colyer, M.D., along with Team Kansas officials.
Exporter of the Year
The 2018 Governor’s Exporter of the Year award, which is presented annually to a single Kansas company in recognition of its excellent performance in international trade and outstanding international marketing, was presented to Schroer Manufacturing Company of Kansas City, Kansas. Commonly known by its Shor-Line trade name, the company is an international leader in the manufacture and sale of veterinary medical and related animal care equipment. With an extensive distributor network and affiliated operations in the UK and China, Shor-Line has a strong international presence.
Two Sabetha businesses — Extru-Tech and Northwind Technical Services — were finalists for the Governor’s Exporter of the Year award.
Extru-Tech, Inc. manufactures extrusion systems primarily for human and animal food applications. The company began exporting in the 1990s and today serves customers in more than 20 countries.
NorthWind Technical Services began exporting its process automation services and control panels more recently and now serves customers in 15 countries on five continents.
Other finalists included Knit-Rite of Kansas City and McFarlane Aviation of Baldwin City.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of this prestigious award. The award’s first-ever winner was Sabetha business Wenger Manufacturing.
The Governor’s Exporter of the Year is selected by the Kansas International Trade Coordinating Council (KITCC) which reviews dozens of candidates before selecting five finalists. The rigorous selection process includes site visits to each company finalist and interviews with its management team. KITCC is composed of representatives of companies that have previously won the award along with international trade specialists from industry, government and academia. In addition to advocating for this award intended to recognize the significance of foreign trade for our state’s economy, KITCC also seeks to facilitate access to the state’s international resources for all Kansas companies interested in exporting.
