Governing Body: Brown County Commission

The Board of Brown County Commissioners met in regular session Monday, June 11. Members present were Chairman Steve Roberts, Dwight Kruse and Keith Olsen. Also present were County Clerk Melissa Gormley and Deputy County Clerk Dawn Boyles. County Attorney Kevin Hill was present for a portion of the meeting. Steve Roberts opened the meeting at 8:10 a.m.

The commissioners held a 15-minute executive session on non-elected personnel with the three commissioners, Gormley and Brown County Interim Appraiser Teresa Clements present to discuss personnel matters of non-elected personnel with executive session necessary to protect privacy interests. No binding action was taken following the executive session.

The commissioners decided to have Bob’s Janitorial wash the inside and outside windows at the courthouse and to be paid for out of the janitor’s budget.

RDA Director Nancy Gafford, Sabetha City Administrator Doug Allen, and Sabetha Assistant City Administrator Bill Shroyer discussed the Cost Benefit Analysis on two applications for tax abatements from Brown County.

Olsen made a motion to amend his previous motion to approve and sign Option B on the Bob’s Janitorial contract for a one time annual cleaning of the courthouse windows. Total cost would be $2,175 and would be paid out of the Janitor’s budget. The motion was seconded and approved.

Department Reports

Brown County Sheriff John Merchant reported that there are 30 inmates – 22 males and eight females – in the County Jail. Merchant also updated the Commission on the Summer Lunch Program.

Noxious Weed Director George Bruning discussed cutting back on spraying for a short time due to the heat.

The June 6, 2018, payroll was approved as follows: General, $68,577.52; Road and Bridge, $16,100.70; Election, $1,665.77; Technology, $756.44; Appraiser, $5,201.95; Noxious Weed, $1,440; Diversion, $3,700; ACC, $6,195.84; JJA Core, $6,900.12; Reinvestment Grant, $1,681.88; Services for Elderly, $2,398.50; Solid Waste, $3,829.25; Special MVT, $2,460.01; Employee Ben FICA, $7,879.88; and Employee Benefits KPERS, $9,171.67. After State Unemployment and Workers Compensation of $122.92 and Insurance of $2,081.21 were taken out, the total was $135,755.40.

Community Corrections Director Venice Sloan presented budget adjustments for the commission’s signatures.

The budgets were reviewed by the Board of Commissioners. Some budget requests were trimmed while others were increased.

The commissioners approved the June 4 minutes.

The next regular meeting was held Monday, June 18. These minutes were not available at The Herald’s press time.
