Jays top Cyclones, fall to Panthers

In the Sabetha High School’s first home volleyball triangular of the season, the Lady Jays faced Riverside and Royal Valley. It was the first of a new format being utilized by the league this season, putting each team against two foes at each outing.

“Playing two different teams on a game night was different for the girls but we took the adjustment in stride,” said Head Coach Abby Stueve.

In the first match of the day, Sabetha topped Riverside in two sets — 25-17 and 25-17.

“Being able to start the night off with a win against Riverside gave the girls some confidence going into the match against the number one state ranked team, Royal Valley,” Stueve said.

The Jays hit 44 of 48 serves, for a 91.7 percent serving efficiency as a team. Individually, they were led by junior Nikki Kuenzi who was relentless from behind the line — hitting all 11 of her serve attempts and crashing five aces on her opponents.

Also serving 100 percent were sophomore Melinna Schumann with seven, and senior Hillary Krebs with four.

Offensively, the team tallied 22 kills on 79 of 92 hitting. Schumann led the team, hitting 26 of 30 with 11 kills.

The team totaled 22 set assists, led by senior setter Trista Argabright with 13.

Defensively, the team tallied 33 serve receives, led by Krebs with 18; and 52 defensive digs, led again by Krebs with 19. The team also tallied five blocks.

In the night’s second match, against Royal Valley, Sabetha fell in two sets — 18-25 and 18-25.

“RV is a solid team with hitters all around and a back row to match,” Stueve said. “We found our rhythm by getting a quick start and competing the entire game.”

The Jays hit 33 of 37 serves, for a 89.2 percent serving efficiency as a team. Players hitting 100 percent were junior Morgan Schuette with seven, junior Kinley Schuette with five, Kuenzi with four, and Krebs with four.

Offensively, the team tallied 17 kills on 73 of 95 hitting. They were led by Kuenzi, who had seven kills on 23 of 29 hitting. She was closely followed by Schumann, who had five kills on 19 of 28 hitting.

The team totaled 17 set assists, led by Argabright with 11.

Defensively, the team tallied 46 serve receives, led by Krebs with 21; and 46 defensive digs, led by Krebs with 16. The team also had four blocks.

“We had to focus on our block and get as many touches to slow down the attack as much as possible, which gave us numerous opportunities to attack and win the volley,” Stueve said. “Our downfall was allowing RV to string points together and get some mini rolls.”

“We emphasize, continuously, the importance of first ball attacks to side out and shift momentum,” she said. “As we build our season, it is obvious these girls are learning and adjusting to our opponents.”
