Jays post 3-1 record at Nemaha Central Invitational

The Sabetha High School Bluejays traveled to Seneca on Saturday, Sept. 8, for a 10-team invitational. Sabetha was pitted against Rock Creek, Nemaha Central, Horton and ACCHS in pool play.

In the first match of the morning for the Jays, Sabetha fell to Nemaha Central in two sets — 28-26 and 25-5.

The team hit 26 of 30 serve attempts for 86.7 efficiency. Serving 100 percent were senior Hillary Krebs with seven, junior Kinley Schuette with five, and sophomore Melinna Schumann with five.

Offensively, the team tallied 62 of 78 hitting — led by Schumann who went 18 of 21 with two kills, and junior Nikki Kuenzi who went 17 of 24 with five kills.

K. Schuette tallied eight set assists, of the team’s 12 total.

Defensively, the Jays had 45 serve receives, led by Krebs with 21; and 35 defensive digs, led by Krebs with 13. The team also had three blocks.

In the second match, Sabetha defeated ACCHS in three sets — winning the first and third sets 25-16 and 25-21 and losing the middle set 19-25.

The team hit 62 of 69 serves for 89.9 percent efficiency. Serving 100 percent were K. Schuette with 10, Krebs with eight and Kuenzi with six. Schumann hit 17 of 19 serves with three aces, while junior Morgan Schuette went 12 of 14 from the service line.

Offensively, the team tallied 108 of 136 hitting — led by Kuenzi who went 31/41 with 10 kills, and Schumann who went 31 of 39 with eight kills.

Senior Trista Argabright tallied 18 set assists, of the team’s 32 total.

Defensively, the Jays had 58 serve receives, led by Krebs with 36; and 78 defensive digs, led by Krebs with 23. Schumann also added 19 digs.

In the third match, Sabetha topped Rock Creek in three sets — losing the first set 21-25, and winning the final two sets 26-24 and 25-16.

The Jays hit 63 of 71 serves for 88.7 percent efficiency. K. Schuette led her team, hitting all 11 attempts with one ace.

Offensively, Sabetha tallied 117 of 135 hitting — led by Schumann who went 32 of 37 with six kills. M. Schuette scored a 50 percent kill rate, tallying seven kills on 14 good hits with no hitting errors.

Argabright tallied 12 set assists, of the team’s 27 total.

Defensively, the team tallied 59 serve receives, led by Krebs with 21 and Schumann with 18; and 86 defensive digs, led by Krebs with 23 and Schumann with 20.

In the final match of pool play for the Jays, Sabetha defeated Horton in two sets — 25-15 and 25-13.

Sabetha served 42 of 48 in the match, for an 87.5 percent efficiency. Serving 100 percent was K. Schuette, who hit all five of her attempts. M. Schuette led her team in number, hitting 14 of 15 serves and tallying four aces.

The team hit 44 of 55 attempts, led by Kuenzi who went 18 of 20 with seven kills. K. Schuette tallied seven set assists, of the team’s 13 total.

Defensively, the Jays had 25 serve receives, led by Krebs with 12; and 30 defensive digs, led again by Krebs with 12.

Advancing out of the purple pool were Rock Creek and Nemaha Central, both with 3-1 records. The Jays also finished the day with a 3-1 record in pool play, but did not advance to tournament play.

In the blue pool were Marysville, Atchison, Pleasant Ridge, Hiawatha and Riverside. Advancing out of that pool were Marysville with a 4-0 record and Atchison with a 3-1 record.

In tournament play, Atchison defeated Rock Creek, and Nemaha Central defeated Marysville. In the third-place match-up, Marysville defeated Rock Creek. Nemaha Central topped Atchison in two sets to win first place.
