Elsie “Nadine” Wheeler

Elsie “Nadine” Wheeler, 86, of rural Circleville and Soldier, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2018, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka after a courageous battle with ALS.

Nadine was born July 5, 1932, on the family farm near Goff, the second daughter to Alva and Elsie (Rutledge) Neal. She graduated from Soldier High School.

She married Lester Wheeler on May 27, 1950. They made their home near Soldier. She worked in the food service industry for 32 years, starting at the Circleville School system and retiring from Jackson Heights as the head cook. She was a member of the Soldier Christian Church.

Nadine is survived by her four children, Wayne (Sue) Wheeler of Circleville, Kenny (Sara Wege) Wheeler of Westmoreland, Augusta Richardson of Topeka, and Becky (Steve) Milne of Wetmore; sister, Norma Murphy of Hoyt; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Soldier Cemetery immediately following the service. Nadine will lie in state at Mercer Funeral Home beginning Monday afternoon, Sept. 17.
