Volleyball tops Hiawatha, falls to Holton

The Sabetha High School Lady Jays traveled to Hiawatha for a triangular with Hiawatha and Holton on Tuesday, Sept. 11. Sabetha finished the night 1-1 — defeating Hiawatha but falling to Holton.

“We are perfectly capable of winning both games, but we struggled to perform at the end of the game,” said Head Coach Abby Stueve. “Performing is key to being the caliber of team that we are striving to be.”

Sabetha defeated Hiawatha in a two-set match, 25-16 and 25-18.

The Jays made good on 45 of 49 serve attempts, for a 91.8 percent efficiency. Serving at 100 percent were sophomore Melinna Schumann with three aces on 12 good serves, junior Kinley Schuette with two aces on nine good serves, and junior Morgan Schuette with one ace on six good serves.

Offensively, the team tallied 17 kills on 56 of 62 hitting. Leading the way was Schumann, who had five kills on 15 hits with no hitting errors. K. Schuette provided eight set assists, of the team’s 17 total.

Defensively, Sabetha tallied 28 serve receives, led by senior Hillary Krebs with 10; and 43 defensive digs, led by Schumann with 14. The team also tallied 3.5 blocks.

Sabetha fell to Holton in a three-set match — winning the first set 25-23, but losing the second two 23-25 and 20-25.

The team served well, hitting 63 of 68 attempts for 92.6 percent efficiency. Three players were 100 percent for the match, led by Krebs with 16 including three aces. Schumann tallied 15 good serves, including three aces; and K. Schuette had 10 good serves with one ace.

Offensively, the team scored 26 kills off of 148 of 168 hitting. Schumann led the team, tallying 10 kills on 41 of 44 hitting. Junior Nikki Kuenzi had six kills on 35 of 40 hitting. Senior Trista Argabright provided 13 sets assists, of the team’s 26 total.

Defensively, the team tallied 68 serve receives, led by Krebs with 27; and 111 defensive digs, led by Krebs with 29 and Schumann with 23. The team tallied 5.5 total blocks.

“At some point, we must start winning the hard fought games to be able to achieve the season goals,” Stueve said. “With that said, I am seeing growth, and we will learn from this loss to Holton.”
