Jays claw out league wins

The Sabetha High School Lady Jays came out of the home triangular on Tuesday, Sept. 18, with two wins — pulling out hard-fought defeats over league foes Perry-Lecompton and Jeff West.

“This triangular was set to be good competition. All teams came with a 3-2 league record,” said Head Coach Abby Stueve. “Coming out of the night 2-0 gave the girls quite a bit of confidence.”

In the first match of the night, versus Perry-Lecompton, Sabetha took the win in two sets — 25-18 and 25-17.

The Jays missed just one serve, going 49 of 50 for a 98 percent efficiency. Serving 100 percent and leading the team from the service line was junior Kinley Schuette with 10 good serves, including two aces. Also serving 100 percent, junior Morgan Schuette and senior Hillary Krebs both hit all eight of their attempts. Sophomore Melinna Schumann had 12 of 13 with two aces.

Offensively, the team tallied 19 kills on 62 of 75 hitting. Schumann led the team, tallying seven kills on 20 of 21 hitting.

Senior Trista Argabright had 11 set assists, of the team’s 19 total.

Defensively, the Lady Jays tallied 30 serve receive passes, led by Krebs with 18; and 46 defensive digs, led by Schumann with 17. Sabetha had 5.5 total blocks, led by senior Shayna Strahm with one solo and two assist blocks.

In Sabetha’s final match of the night, the team defeated Jeff West in two sets — 25-19 and 35-33.

The Jays tallied a 91.4 percent serving efficiency on 53 of 58 serving. Junior Nikki Kuenzi led the team, hitting on 11 of her attempts and tallying one ace. Schumann went nine for nine, and Argabright tallied 10 of 11 from the service line.

Sabetha tallied 19 kills on 91 of 104 hitting. Schumann again led the way offensively, tallying 33 good hits on 35 attempts, with eight kills.

Argabright had 10 set assists, of the team’s 19 total.

Defensively, the Lady Jays tallied 47 serve receive passes, led by Krebs with 18; and 61 defensive digs, led by Krebs with 17 and Schumann with 16.

The team tallied 10 total blocks, led by Strahm with five assist blocks.

“We have been talking about what type of team we need to be, and after losing to Holton, we need to be the team that wins the tough and close games,” Stueve said. “Last night we did that in a 35-33 win over Jeff West. We showed perseverance, we were really scrappy at times, and stayed aggressive.”

Even with an injury to M. Schuette, Coach Stueve said the team didn’t miss a beat.

“I was proud of the how easily an injury substitution on the court fit into the rhythm of the team,” Stueve said. “We are still building, still learning, and still fighting so we can be successful at the end of the season.”
