Lady Jays compete at Hayden

The Lady Jays tennis team started off a busy week at Hayden on Monday, Sept. 24, competing against Hayden, Baldwin, Cornerstone and Perry-Lecompton.

Junior Bree Voos and senior Jessica Payne competed in the singles competitions. Payne went 2-1 on the day, defeating Baldwin and Perry-Lecompton, and falling to Hayden’s Rhen Calhoon in a close match. Voos went 1-3 for the day, defeating Perry-Lecompton, but falling to Hayden, Baldwin and Cornerstone.

Seniors Kirsten Wenger and Brooklyn Bauman competed in number one doubles for Sabetha. They went 2-1 for the day — beating Cornerstone and Baldwin, which they won 8-7 (7-5). They fell to Hayden.

In number two doubles, juniors Hannah Wertenberger and Kinsey Menold went 4-0 for the day, claiming two wins and two wins by forfeit.

Juniors Emily Murchison and Olivia Meyer also competed in a few number two doubles matches. They claimed one win over Cornerstone, but fell to Hayden, Baldwin and Perry-Lecompton, as well as collecting a win over another Perry-Lecompton doubles team who forfeited.

Head Coach Alicia Deters said the Hayden competition helped her make some decisions for regionals.

“Singles played very well in very good competition,” she said. “I saw some things that will help make some regional decisions.”
