Cross Country teams finish third at home meet

The Sabetha Bluejay cross country team played host for an invitational meet on Thursday, Oct. 4. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams finished in third place.

“The kids ran well at our home meet and I am proud of them,” said Head Coach Doug Leiker. “Times are continuing to come down and improve at just the right time of our season.”

Boys

The boys’ team placed third overall with a score of 114, while Wamego placed first with the score of 43 and Baldwin placed second with a score of 91.

Other team scores and placings were Jackson Heights, 116, fourth; Marysville, 121, fifth; Royal Valley, 166, sixth; Holton, 181, seventh; St. Marys, 194, eighth; Nemaha Central, 243, ninth; Wetmore, 264, 10th; Jefferson West, 280, 11th; Rossville, 305, 12th; and Horton, 309, 13th.

The Bluejays were led by senior Henry Glynn, who placed fourth overall with a time of 17 minutes, 56 seconds. Other Bluejays placed as follows: sophomore Braden Menold, 24th; sophomore Spencer Strahm and freshman Tyrese Bishop just a second apart in 26th and 27th places, respectively; and sophomore Darrin Funk and freshman Memphis Cochran in 33rd and 34th places, respectively. Junior Micah Romines completed the race in 38th place.

Girls

The girls’ team also finished third overall with a score of 110, behind Baldwin in first with a score of 15 and Wamego in second with a score of 77. Other team scores and placings were St. Marys, 127, fourth; Holton, 172, fifth; Jefferson West, 172, sixth; Jackson Heights, 172, seventh; Marysville, 175, eighth; and Rossville, 177, ninth.

Freshman Jadyn Dorn was the first Lady Jay across the finish line in 11th place with a time of 21 minutes, 26 seconds. Following Dorn were senior Skylar McAfee in 18th place; sophomore Kenzie Meyer in 21st; senior Megan Meyer in 36th; senior Hunter Lowdermilk in 40th; and junior Madisen Cochran in 48th. Sophomore Hattie Lukert competed in the varsity race, but was unable to finish due to injury.

The Jays will travel to Riverside on Thursday, Oct. 11, for the Big 7 League meet, which begins at 4 p.m. Sabetha will host the regional cross country meet at Sabetha Golf Club on Saturday, Oct. 20. The girls’ race begins at 10:30 a.m. and the boys’ race begins at 11:15 a.m.
