Wetmore falls in close game to Doniphan West

The Wetmore Cardinals welcomed Doniphan West to town Friday, Oct. 5, for a Twin Valley League match-up. The score was close throughout the game, but Doniphan West persevered and would win 48-32.

Senior Joel Hutfles scored for the Cardinals in the first quarter on a 56-yard punt return, but the Cardinals attempt at a two-point conversion failed. Hutfles also completed a 13-yard pass to Jonathan Hladky-Bailey for a touchdown. Doniphan West managed to score one touchdown also during the first quarter. At the end of one, Wetmore led 12-6.

In the second quarter, Joel Hutfles made good on a 3-yard run on a quarterback keeper. Doniphan West continued to keep up the pace with Wetmore and tied up the score 18-18 at the end of the first half.

Both teams went score for score in the third quarter. Hutfles kept the ball close, and scored two touchdowns – a 39-yard run and a 14-yard run. Hutfles also made good on one two-point conversion. At the end of the third, the score was tied again 32-32.

Doniphan West pulled ahead in the fourth quarter, scoring two additional touchdowns and eventually winning the game 48-32.

Despite the close game, Head Coach Rick Schnacker said the team still has a lot of work to do.

“There were too many penalties, and too many breakdowns on both sides of the ball, especially at critical times in the game,” he said. “Inconsistency really hurt us. Offensively, we were able to put together some drives and score but we must improve our consistency. We took care of the ball and did a great job reducing turnovers. We played well defensively but gave up too many big plays at critical times in the game. We showed improvement this week but fell short in the end.”

With the loss, the Cardinals look forward to this week’s Big Seven League contest.

“We need to learn from this game and move forward,” Schnacker said. “I can’t say enough about our efforts, we played hard and these boys should be proud of their efforts. We need to continue to gain experience and be better prepared this week.”

Wetmore will travel to Hanover on Friday, Oct. 12.
