SHS Football: Bluejays clinch first Big 7 League title since 2007

With one game left in the regular season, the Bluejays stood just one opponent away from finishing with an undefeated regular season.

Royal Valley’s Panthers were their opponent, and the Jays made light work out the contest to take the victory 48-0.

It took just two plays and a few seconds off of the clock for the Jays to strike first with running back Mason Spellmeier having a 56-yard tote to end zone.

After a Panther three and out, Sabetha’s Joseph Gruber rocked the house on a 30-yard run to increase his team’s lead to 14-0.

Sabetha would lead 20-0 at the end of the first period, after quarterback Gabe Garber connected with receiver Jesse Burger for a 3-yard touchdown reception.

Garber added a pair of passing touchdowns in the second quarter with a 55-yard strike to Gruber and the other to Ryan Stapleton from 24 yards out.

At the intermission, the Bluejays led 35-0.

“Offensively we executed fairly well, but I really liked our passing game,” said Head Coach Garrett Michael. “It started with our protection, we ran our routes well and they made really good throwing reads.”

Sabetha’s defense kept the Panthers on their heels throughout the game. Braeden Cox had an interception, and Colby Tinklin had a sack in the second quarter. Sabetha’s reserve players kept the Panthers out of the end zone through the second half to help complete the shutout.

“Our JV has their hard work throughout the year pay off by getting a lot of playing time. I was very proud of the guys who came in in the second half,” Coach Michael said.

Spellmeier had his second touchdown of the night early in the second half, and Andrew Frazee had a 6-yard touchdown run late in the third frame to add the final tally.

Sabetha continued the streak with the 48-0 victory.

With the win Sabetha completed the perfect regular season going 8-0 and clinching the Big Seven League title for the first time since 2007. The Bluejays also stand atop District 4 teams after defeating district runner-up Perry-Lecompton Kaws in week three.

With the distinction, Sabetha earned a home game bid and will host another Big Seven League foe in Jeff West this coming Friday.

“Jeff West will bring a very aggressive defense with big size up front,” Coach Michael said. “Their offense is spread with a ton of athletes, and we will have to be disciplined and play very, very physical.”

Sabetha will welcome Jeff West to town Friday, Oct. 26, for their district match-up.
