WHS Football: Cardinals fall to Onaga

The Wetmore Cardinals traveled to Onaga Friday, Oct. 19, for their last regular season match-up. Both teams had some big plays, but it would be Onaga who would win, 36-18.

Onaga got on the board first, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter. Wetmore fought back in the second and scores two touchdowns – one 25-yard interception return and one 18-yard run – both by senior Joel Hutfles. Onaga battled back, though, and extended their lead by two more touchdowns. At the end of the first half, the score was 28-12.

In the third quarter, the Cardinals held Onaga scoreless, while Hutfles scored another 1-yard touchdown. Onaga came back again the fourth quarter and scored their final touchdown and sealed the win, 36-18.

“We couldn’t defend Onaga’s run game and gave up too many big plays at crucial times of the game,” said Head Coach Rick Schnacker. “We made some big play ourselves and did some good things offensively, but did not play consistently. We had some good individual performances but fell short in the end. We need to prepare for our last game and end the season on a positive note.”

Wetmore will travel to Tescott on Thursday, Oct. 25, for their District match-up. Kick-off will be at 5:15 p.m.
