With win over Kaws, Bluejays advance to Sectionals

With the win over Jeff West, Sabetha advanced to the Regional playoff last Friday and hosted league foe Perry-Lecompton after their win over Wamego. The Jays fell behind early, but scored 26 consecutive points to defeat the Kaws for the second time this season, 26-8, to continue their win streak and advance to the next round.

“The game plan needed different types of players than our normal starters and our kids continue to make sure the team is the higher priority than themselves,” said Head Coach Garrett Michael. “All the credit goes to every player on this team because all have important roles and they all executed them.”

Perry posted the first points of the contest midway through the first quarter when Kaw quarterback William Welch connected with his receiver Colton Mallonee for a 45-yard pitch and catch. The two-point conversion run gave the Kaws the 8-0 advantage at the end of the first.

The Jays would answer early in the second frame when they marched 60 yards on 13 plays and capped it off with a 14-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Gabe Garber to wide-out Ryan Stapleton. Joseph Gruber gave his team their first lead of the night with a 1-yard tote to the end zone with just under five minutes to play in the half. Just before the intermission, place kicker Braeden Cox split the uprights with a 37-yard field goal. Sabetha led 17-8 at the break.

Cox had a huge night for his team as he was two for two on his P.A.Ts in the first half, in addition to the field goal. But in the second half, Cox had a 77-yard pick-six late in the third quarter, and after a Kamden Brownlee fumble recovery and 60-yard return, Cox kicked his second 37-yard field goal of the night with two minutes to play.

Sabetha won the turnover battle, giving up two fumbles while the defense recovered one Perry fumble and intercepted the Kaws three times in the second half — with one pick by Stapleton and two by Cox. The Jays remain unbeaten with the 26-8 victory and advance to the Sectional contest.

The 8-2 Parsons Vikings will host Sabetha at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9. The Vikings used their spread offense and attacking defense to advance over Prairie View 38-23.

“Parsons has really good athletes at the skills positions, and they have some size too,” Coach Michael said.
