Bluejays defeats Marysville 77-50

In the pre-season rankings, both the Sabetha Bluejays and the Marysville Bulldogs enjoyed the early nod from the Coaches Association to find themselves ranked in the top 10. The Jays were ranked third, and the 2018 State runner-up Bulldogs were dialed in at seventh by the coaches.

Marysville won their season opener easily against Axtell 75-33 to increase the hype and anticipation for their match-up with Sabetha. The Jays showed that they could transition from football to basketball in short fashion, led by Ryan Stapleton’s 19 points, and pummeled the Bulldogs 77-50.

The Bulldogs posted the first points of the contest with a Gavin Peischl three-pointer to take the early lead. But six Sabetha players would ink points in the first quarter, led by Jesse Burger with 5, and Ryan Stapleton and Braeden Cox with 4 apiece, to build a 19-11 advantage after one.

Stapleton erupted for 8 more points on two treys and a bucket in the second frame, and the Bluejays outscored their guests 23-16. Cox added 5 points to his personal tally in the period, with four other players chipping in, and Sabetha led 42-27 at the break.

The Jays came out sluggish in the second half and had pair of early turnovers, and Marysville’s man defense limited their hosts to their lowest offensive output of the night at just 13 points. Stapleton added 5 more points, and Joseph Gruber had 4. The Bulldogs climbed back into the game and pulled to within 7, but the Jays would maintain their lead 55-43 at the end of the third.

Marysville was held in check in the fourth quarter and managed just 7 points in the final eight minutes. Sabetha’s man-to-man defense cut off the lane and refused to give second chance opportunities to their opponent. The Bluejays put up 22 points in the final stanza to pull away from the Bulldogs and take the 77-50 win.

Sabetha starts 1-0 on the scoring of Stapleton with 19, Burger and Gruber each with 12 each, and Cox accounting for 11 points in the campaign.

The Jays go on the road on Tuesday, Dec. 4, to face the Wamego Red Raiders, and then finish the week with a home stand against the 0-1 Jeff West Tigers on Friday, Dec. 7.
