Lady Jays open season with 60-32 win over Marysville

Hardwood action was tipped into motion with the inaugural game when the Lady Jays welcomed the Marysville Lady Bulldogs to town Friday, Nov. 30. Marysville finished last season with a fourth place finish in the State and tipped off this season with 49-38 victory over Axtell.

Sabetha jumped out to the early lead, led by Hillary Krebs’ three triples, and they never looked back to take the victory over their guests, 60-32.

Krebs opened the scoring of the contest with her first of three treys on her team’s first possession. Marysville would answer and pull within a point, but Sabetha went on a 12-4 run through the rest of the period and led 15-7 at the end of the first.

Six players posted points for the Lady Jays in the second frame, and they would stretch a 12-point advantage by the end of the half. Krebs finished with a team leading 9 points, followed by Skyler McAfee and Payton Michael with 5 points each. Sabetha led 30-18 at the intermission.

The Lady Jays relied on the three-ball to open the second half with Marysville zone defense leaving the perimeter open. Sabetha was 0-3 from the two-point range but four of seven from behind the arc, while holding the Lady Bulldogs to just 6 points in the third quarter.

Krebs had 6 points, McAfee added a trey and two free throws for 5, and Trista Argabright swished a triple. Sabetha led 44-24 heading into the home stretch.

Maggi Hughes took the helm steering the offensive machine in the fourth quarter and led her team with 5 points. Jessica Payne also added a bucket early in the period.

With some insurance points on the board, Sabetha’s reserve players logged some varsity minutes to finish the contest. Brooklyn Bauman added a bucket and a pair of free throws for 4 points, Sofia Kuenzi was perfect from the line — hitting a pair of free tosses — and Marissa Cox buried a trey at the horn.

The Lady Jays opened the new season with a 60-32 victory over the visiting Lady Bulldogs. Krebs finished with 15, while McAfee and Hughes kicked in 10 apiece. Sabetha hit 11 treys on the night, with Krebs accounting for five of those.

The Lady Jays will hit the road for the first time with a non-league contest with the Wamego Red Raiders on Tuesday, Dec. 4, before hosting the 1-0 Jeff West Lady Tigers who picked up their first win over Silver Lake.
