Sabetha Bluejays start season with Raider Classic Tournament

The 2018-19 Sabetha High School Bluejay wrestling season got underway on Saturday, Dec. 1, when the Jays traveled to Wamego to participate in the 2018 Raider Classic Tournament.

Fifteen teams participated in this year’s tournament, which was won by Salina Central with 331 points scored. The Jays finished in 10th place with a total of 67 points.

The Jays took a limited number of wrestlers to the tournament, due to the fact that the football season had just been completed the weekend before.

“I think all great wrestlers appreciate a good battle, and that is what we got ourselves into at Wamego,” said Assistant Head Coach Hunter Howerton. “These battles will help us moving forward.”

Five wrestlers competed in the Raider Classic. Sophomore Kaden Dillon placed second at 132 pounds, and sophomore Michael Gugelman captured fourth place at 145 pounds. Freshman 195-pound Jared Kruse took fifth place, freshman 106-pound Cameron Harrell finished in seventh place, and junior 138-pound Braden Mitchell captured seventh place.

“Our focus is always going to be to perform well in February,” said Head Coach Ricky Creek. “Everything leading up to that is just practice and preparation. After a few more practices, things will start clicking a little better and we will start wrestling even better than we already are.”

The Jays’ next action will be Thursday, Dec. 6, at Rockport, Mo.
