SHS athletes earn All Big 7 League, All State honors

Twenty-three Sabetha High School athletes earn post-season honors following the 2018 fall sports season. Twenty-three athletes from Sabetha High School were named in the 2018 fall sports Big 7 League and All State Honors. Those being named with All League or All State Honors are listed below, as well as team and individual achievements for the 2018 fall season.

Football

The Sabetha Bluejays opened their season against Nemaha Central on Aug. 31 and wrapped up the season on Saturday, Nov. 24, against Pratt at the 3A State Championship game in Hutchinson.

Sabetha would win the 3A State Championship game after defeating Pratt in overtime, 43-32. The Bluejays also claimed their first Big 7 League title since 2007. The Bluejays finished the season with a 13-0 record.

Throughout the 2018 season, the Bluejays tallied 254 first downs, 607 rushes for 4,000 yards, 58 out of 89 passes for 1,006 yards. The Bluejays also converted 27 times on fourth downs and 64 times on third downs.

Joe Gruber

Senior

Throughout the 2018 season, Joe totaled 71 tackles – 32 unassisted and 39 assisted – one interception, seven receptions for 140 yards, and 183 rushes for 1,313 yards for the Bluejays. He also tallied 20 touchdowns and three 2-point conversions.

Mason Engelken

Senior

All Big 7 League Running Back First Team, All Big 7 League Defensive End/Outside Linebacker First Team

Throughout the 2018 season, Mason totaled 14 tackles – 10 unassisted and four assisted – one interception, and 42 rushes for 464 yards for the Bluejays. He also tallied five touchdowns.

Elliott Strahm

Throughout the 2018 season, Elliott totaled 45 tackles – 22 unassisted and 23 assisted – three sacks and one blocked kick.

Cauy Rokey

Senior

Throughout the 2018 season, Cauy totaled 119 tackles – 54 unassisted and 65 assisted – two fumble recoveries and one blocked kick.

Joel Hackney

Senior

All District Defensive End/Outside Linebacker First Team

Throughout the 2018 season, Joel totaled 24 tackles – nine unassisted and 15 assisted – one interceptions, and 34 rushes for 278 yards. He also tallied five touchdowns.

Braeden Cox

Senior

All Big 7 League Kicker First Team, All Big 7 League Defensive Back Honorable Mention, All District 4 Defensive Back First Team, All District 4 Kicker First Team, 3A All State First Team Defensive Back (WE), 3A All State Honorable Mention Kicker (WE), 3A All State Defensive  Specialist (TCJ)

Throughout the 2018 season, Braeden totaled 33 tackles – 21 unassisted and 12 assisted – nine interceptions, 10 receptions for 161 yards, and two rushes for 21 yards for the Bluejays. He also tallied four touchdowns, 53 point after kicks, and eight field goals with the longest being from 37 yards out.

Ryan Stapleton

Senior

All Big 7 League Defensive Back Honorable Mention, All District 4 Wide Receiver First Team

Throughout the 2018 season, Ryan totaled 36 tackles – 21 unassisted and 15 assisted – three interceptions, one fumble recovery, and 17 receptions for 296 yards for the Bluejays. He also tallied eight touchdowns.

Payton Lippert

Senior

All District 4 Offensive Line Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2018 season, Payton totaled two tackles – one unassisted and one assisted. Payton, the quarterback of the offensive line, started the

past 26 games at center, without bobbling any snaps.

Kamden Brownlee

Senior

All Big 7 League Defensive Line First Team, All District 4 Defensive Line First Team, All State Honorable Mention Defensive Line (WE), All State Honorable Mention Lineman (TCJ)

Throughout the 2018 season, Kamden totaled 58 tackles – 15 unassisted and 43 assisted –four sacks, two fumble recoveries and three receptions for 16 yards.

Gabe Garber

Junior

All Big 7 League Quarterback Honorable Mention, All Big 7 League Inside Linebacker First Team, All District 4 Inside Linebacker Honorable Mention, All District 4 Quarterback First Team, 3A All State Honorable Mention Linebacker (WE), 3A All State Honorable Mention Linebacker (TCJ)

Throughout the 2018 season, Gabe totaled 121 tackles – 48 unassisted and 73 assisted – two interceptions, one forced fumble, and 179 rushes for 1,040 yards for the Bluejays. Gabe threw for 1,006 yards, with 58 completions. He also tallied 18 touchdowns and three 2-point conversions.

Colby Tinklin

Junior

All District Defensive End/Outside Linebacker First Team

Throughout the 2018 season, Colby totaled 43 tackles – 14 unassisted and 32 assisted – and two sacks. Colby helped contain opposing offenses from his right defensive end position, and his solid and dependable performance  kept opposing ball carriers from being able to turn the corner and head up field.

Carson Ukele

Junior

All Big 7 League Offensive Line Honorable Mention, All District 4 Offensive Line Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2018 season, Carson totaled 27 tackles – four unassisted and 23 assisted – one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Drew Schmelzle

Sophomore

All District 4 Tight End Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2018 season, Drew totaled 39 tackles – 26 unassisted and 13 assisted – five receptions for 124 yards, and five rushes for 10 yards for the Bluejays. He also tallied one touchdown and one 2-point conversions.

Volleyball

The Lady Jays opened their season at the Marysville Tournament on Aug. 25, and finished their season against Clay Center on Oct. 20 at the Sub-State Tournament. The Jays finished the season with an 18-17 record.

Hillary Krebs

Senior

All Big 7 League Libero First Team

As Sabetha’s libero, Hillary tallied 488 defensive digs and 626 serve receives, with an average passing score of 2.28 out of 3. A very strong server for the team, Hillary made good on 95.1 percent of her serves — knocking over a total of 254, of which 23 were aces. She also tallied 20 set assists, and 112 good hits, from the back row, with 6 kills.

Nikole Kuenzi

Junior

All Big 7 League Outside Hitter Honorable Mention

As an outside hitter, Nikole tallied 630 good hits and 155 kills. She also had 10 solo blocks and 18 assist blocks. Nikole hit 88.6 percent of her serves on the year, totaling 179 good serves with 25 aces. Defensively, she tallied 241 defensive digs and 255 serve receives, with an average passing score of 1.69 out of 3.

Melinna Schumann

Sophomore

All Big 7 League Outside Hitter First Team

As an outside hitter, Melinna tallied 842 good hits and 250 kills, as well as 18 solo blocks and 32 assist blocks. From the service line, Melinna tallied 323 good serves with 57 aces, making good of 93.1 percent of her attempts. Additionally, she tallied 464 defensive digs, 368 serve receives, with an average passing score of 1.96 out of 3, and 10 set assists.

Cross Country

The Sabetha Bluejay Cross Country team opened their season on Aug. 30 at Jeff West and concluded their season by sending both teams to the State Meet on Oct. 27 in Lawrence.

Throughout the season, the girls’ team earned two first place finishes, at Jeff West and Tonganoxie; one second place finish at the Big 7 League meet and three third place finishes at Horton, Sabetha and the 3A Regional meet. The boys’ team earned two second place finishes at Sabetha and Horton; and two third place finishes at the Big 7 League meet and the 3A Regional meet.

Henry Glynn

Senior

All Big 7 League First Team

Throughout the season, Henry competed in every meet and led the Bluejay harriers in eight out of nine meets. He placed in the top five in six meets. Henry placed 21st at the 3A State meet at Rim Rock. His best time for the season was 16 minutes, 57 seconds at the Big 7 League meet at Riverside, where he placed third overall.

Skylar McAfee

Senior

All Big 7 League First Team

Throughout the season, Skylar competed in every meet and placed in the top five in four meets. Her best time for the season was 20 minutes, 28 seconds at the Big 7 League meet at Riverside, where she placed fifth. She also placed 43rd at the 3A State meet at Rim Rock.

Hattie Lukert

Sophomore

All Big 7 League First Team

Throughout the season, Hattie competed in seven out of nine meets. She placed in the top 10 in six meets, including a first place finish at the 3A Regional meet. Her best time for the season was 20 minutes, 8 seconds at the Big 7 League meet at Riverside, where she placed fourth. She also placed 32nd at the 3A State meet at Rim Rock.

Kenzie Meyer

Sophomore

All Big 7 League First Team

Throughout the season, Kenzie competed in eight out of nine meets. She placed 10th at the Big 7 League meet at Riverside, where she ran her best of the season, which was 20 minutes 54 seconds. She also placed 55th at the 3A State meet at Rim Rock.

Kaden Dillon

Sophomore

Throughout the season, Kaden competed in eight out of nine meets. He placed in the top ten in six meets. He placed 33rd at the 3A State meet  at Rim Rock. His best time for the season was 17 minutes, 2 seconds at the Big 7 League meet at Riverside, where he placed fourth overall.

Spencer Strahm

Sophomore

All Big 7 League Honorable Mention

Throughout the season, Spencer competed in eight out of nine meets and placed 64th at the 3A State meet at Rim Rock. His best time for the season was 17 minutes, 28 seconds at the Big 7 League meet at Riverside, where he placed 12th overall.

Jadyn Dorn

Freshman

All Big 7 League First Team

Throughout the season, Jadyn competed in every meet and placed in the top 10 in three meets. Her best time of the season was 20 minutes, 39 seconds at the Big 7 League meet at Riverside, where she placed eighth. She also placed 50th at the 3A State meet at Rim Rock.

Tennis

The Lady Jays Tennis team opened their season on Aug. 23 in Wamego and concluded their season at the 3A Regional Tournament in Hesston on Oct. 5. 

The tennis team placed first at three meets this season, including two Sabetha tris and a quad at Hayden. They also finished in second at their season opening meet at Wamego.

Seniors Kirsten Wenger and Brooklyn Bauman and juniors Hannah Wertenberger and Kinsey Menold competed in the doubles bracket at the Regional competition in Hesston. Competing at in the singles bracket at Regionals were seniors Ashten Halls and Jessica Payne.

Wenger and Bauman finished their season with a 14-8 record. Wertenberger and Menold finished their seasons with a 13-7 record. Halls finished her season with a 9-15 record. Payne finished her season with a 8-5 record.
