Area youth to compete in County Bee

The 2019 Nemaha County Spelling Bee sponsored by the Alpha Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Nemaha County Courthouse. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., with the Spelling Bee starting at 8:30 a.m. Alternate weather date will be Saturday, Jan. 26.

Judges this year are Karen Benson and Glenda Foley of Hiawatha, and Joyce Fee of Morrill. Barbara Vitt of Seneca will be the pronouncer. Committee members are the officers of Alpha Kappa: Betty Gleason, Seneca president; Carol Bishop, first vice president; and Mary Jane Fleming, secretary and Nemaha County Spelling Bee Coordinator.

Five area schools have registered and paid a fee to participate. The winner of the Nemaha County Spelling Bee will go on to participate at the state level to be held this year at Newman University in Wichita, sponsored by the Kansas Press Association. The winner at the state level will go on to participate at the National Scripps Spelling Bee held in Washington, D.C.

Sabetha Middle School
